News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

The body of a Ukiah man was found in the Russian River several hours after a concerned citizen called to report seeing a man tying a rope onto a bridge in Ukiah, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the MCSO, deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of Vichy Springs Road around 3:30 a.m. April 14 to check on the welfare of a man seen on the Perkins Street Bridge when a “passing motorist observed the male subject standing on the bridge and called to report the situation after observing the male tying a rope to the bridge railing.”

When deputies arrived at the bridge, they reported finding “a rope tied to the top railing of the bridge, but (being) unable to locate the male subject or anyone else in the area.”

However, deputies did report finding “identifying information belonging to a male subject at the scene,” and after being unable to locate the person, they “completed a missing person report.”

The MCSO also notes that “deputies and officers from the Ukiah Police Department searched the area for several hours, but were unable to locate the subject or any other evidence related to this investigation. ”

At approximately 8 a.m. April 14, the MCSO reports that it “initiated a Search and Rescue operation, which consisted of personnel from the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority, MCSO deputies, and MCSO Search and Rescue personnel.”

About two hours into the search, the MCSO reports that a man “was found in the Russian River approximately 300 yards downstream (south) of the Perkins Street Bridge, (and) was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 10:06 a.m.” by MCSO personnel.

The MCSO reports that the man found, identified only as a 53-year-old Ukiah resident, “was the same person from the original scene whose personal identifying information was located near the bridge, and which a missing person report was originally taken.”

The MCSO also notes that “at this point of the continuing coroner’s investigation, details of the investigation and the decedent’s identity will not be released until the legal next of kin has been identified and notified,” and it requests that “anyone with information related to this investigation contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center at 707-463-4086 (option 1).  Information can also be provided anonymously by contacting the non-emergency tip-line at 707-234-2100.”
