Navy has announced Clay Murray as a new assistant coach for its women’s swimming program.
Murray comes to Annapolis after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Ball State, where he served as the on-deck coach and recruiting coordinator for both the men’s and women’s teams.
In a release, Navy head coach John Morrison said that Murray’s “passion for coaching and recruiting will promote our success nationally.”
Murray added that he was honored to accept the position.
“The opportunity to contribute to such a prestigious institution, while working alongside head coach John Morrison and assistant coach Carlyle Ellis is a privilege I deeply value,” Murray said in the release. “I want to thank coach Morrison for offering me this incredible opportunity! I am also excited to work with the strong, dedicated women on the team and help them continue to build on the Academy’s tradition of excellence.”
Murray should be familiar with the region, given he grew up in St. Thomas, Pennsylvania and swam at Westminster College, where he was a first-team all-conference selection as a senior before graduating in 2019.
St. Thomas is located roughly two hours from Annapolis.
In college at Westminster, Murray was a sprint specialist who graduated with the school’s ninth-fastest time in the 100 butterfly (52.26) and was a part of Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship teams in the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay.
Following a two-year stint as an assistant at Westminster, he spent one year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at John Carroll before moving on to Ball State in the summer of 2022.
The Ball State women finished fifth in the Mid-American Conference in each of his three seasons, while the men had one fourth-place finish and two fifth-place finishes.
