There are a lot of different game controllers available, but some of them only work with one console or platform at a time. GameSir has a great collection of controllers that are multi-platform. One of those controllers is the Super Nova. It’s designed with a shape and size that is comparable to and XBox controller, but it has four different game modes so gamers can utilize the one controller with various platforms.

User Experience

Gamesir does a great job with their packaging. The box has a full-color image of the product inside it, clearly labeled with the item’s name. The back has a complete diagram of the controller, including the rear view, and the side of the box has the main features outlined. When you open the box, you’ll find the controller, its charging stand, which houses the USB receiver, a detachable USB-C charging cable, and the user guide.

The user guide is a very large single sheet of paper that is folded like an old paper map. GameSir makes the user guide available in several languages, and even though the instructions are very complete, the print is small and very close together. So it’s not exactly the easiest thing to read. GameSir does have a good support site, and it’s much easier to read the digital version of the manual, but I wish that if they were going to include the print version with the controller that it were easier to read.

My primary gaming platforms these days are my iPhone and iPad, but I did test the Super Nova out with a PC as well. There are three different ways to connect the Super Nova to your chosen device: USB-C cable, wireless receiver, or Bluetooth. Instructions are included for each platform and the most optimal way to connect to that platform.

For example, for iOS, it’s recommended that you connect using Bluetooth. You set the controller mode to Bluetooth using the switch on the back and then pair with your device accordingly. I connected to both my iPhone and iPad and didn’t have any issues with the controller being recognized. I did discover that I can only have the controller connected to one device or the other at a time. I had to forget it from my iPhone after pairing it to my iPad when I tried to connect it a second time.

There is a GameSir app available that allows you to update firmware and customize button layouts. You can even adjust the joystick and trigger settings. You can also adjust light settings for the controller since it has RGB lighting on it. This mobile app is much better than the last time I used it. For a period of time, GameSir apps were only compatible with Android or PC. I’m so glad they opened it more for iOS users.

When testing a controller, I like to run it through a variety of games to see how it handles different gameplay styles. In the past, I’ve run into issues where a controller works fine with simpler games but struggles with more demanding titles. For example, while basic input might be enough for a casual platformer, games like Call of Duty: Mobile require more advanced mapping and functionality. Here’s a quick overview of the games I used to put this controller to the test.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic: This is a basic level game in terms of controller function and it’s available in the App Store. Users only need a directional pad and the A/B buttons. Even though the Super Nova has WAY more buttons and features than are necessary for that game, I still found it responsive and fun to play. I used the D-pad for direction, even though the left joystick worked just as well.

Grand Theft Auto (San Andreas): Originally developed as a console game, this title debuted on PlayStation 2 in 2004, followed by releases for Windows and Xbox in 2005. Unlike Sonic 2, which uses a simpler control scheme, this game requires a more complex setup—you’ll be using both thumbsticks for navigation, along with the triggers, bumpers, and XYAB buttons to fully control your character and interact with the game world. The Super Nova behaved well, and I actually found myself playing longer than needed for testing. GTA is an immersive world, and it’s easy to lose track of time when playing it. I didn’t have any issues with the controller’s performance and gameplay within GTA:SA.

Call of Duty: Mobile: Call of Duty: Mobile can be tricky when it comes to controller support, as it’s designed primarily for touchscreen gameplay. Controller inputs have to translate directly into virtual touch commands, which adds an extra layer of complexity. To make things even more challenging, Activision officially supports only Xbox and PlayStation controllers, meaning third-party options often require additional setup or customization. As a result, finding a controller that works seamlessly out of the box can be a bit of a challenge.

I was pleased to discover that the Super Nova was immediately recognized and I didn’t have to make any mapping adjustments to the controller. I was able to play fluidly and even got MVP several rounds. The only thing I had an issue with was the right stick (which controls the camera movement) was too sensitive. CODM has in-game sensitivity controls, which I did adjust, but I think there is more I can do with the GameSir app to make my gaming experience even better.

Conclusion

The GameSir Super Nova Multiplatform Game Controller stands out as an impressive, budget-friendly option for gamers who want versatility without compromising performance. It seamlessly supports multiple platforms—PC, mobile, and console—with minimal setup, and it delivers a solid user experience. It performed exceptionally well when testing out various games without needing manual configuration. That alone gives it major bonus points. The inclusion of a charging dock, a dedicated mobile app, and support for customization make the Super Nova a solid contender against much more expensive branded controllers.
