CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A group that helps people get out of homelessness says it is no longer able to give people free hotel rooms.
Heal Charlotte says the campus, a hotel off Sugar Creek Road, is not closed, and they still have 35 to 40 families on site, but they can no longer offer hotel rooms at no cost for families.
Heal Charlotte landed a $2.2 million grant in 2023 from the City of Charlotte to expand the Baymont Hotel and offer help to more families trying to make it out of homelessness.
That money allowed them to pay for a one-year master lease at the hotel, but that lease has now ended. Now, they say, the organization doesn’t have money to help people who can’t afford to pay rent.
Queen City News spoke with one woman who was very emotional, telling us she only got a week’s notice that she must leave her home.
“We thank Heal Charlotte, Gregory Jackson, he did what he said he was going to do. He did help many families. This was a program. This is not our property. We understand that but a seven-day notice to pack up. I have to take care of myself. I understand that, and no wonder there’re people in cardboard boxes out there,” said Carmen Lamar in tears.
Heal Charlotte says they have worked to relocate some families to other nearby hotels and get them other community resources, and they are working with families still at the Baymont Hotel to place them into stable housing.
The founder says the organization is in transition but didn’t elaborate on what exactly that means for the future.
Heal Charlotte Founder Greg Jackson sent QCN the following statement:
Thank you for reaching out and for your concern regarding the Heal Charlotte Community Campus on Sugar Creek. I want to clarify that the campus is not closed. While our one-year master lease has ended, we are still fully operational and currently supporting 35 to 40 families who remain on-site.
At this time, we do not have any free rooms available, as our funding cycle with the City of Charlotte has ended, which officially brings our Free Room Program to a close. However, case management services will continue for the families still residing at the hotel, and we remain committed to walking alongside them as they transition into stable housing.
Additionally, our community partners still have families at the hotel, and Heal Charlotte has placed 8 families from the original 17 free rooms into nearby hotels, while we continue to seek out additional housing resources and solutions.
We are in a transition phase, but our mission remains strong. We are still showing up daily, supporting families, and doing the work with faith and purpose.
