Before an earthquake

Inspecting your home for unsecured furniture and preparing an emergency evacuation plan is the first step in preparing for an earthquake.

San Diego Gas & Electric recommends installing earthquake shut-off valves and securing items or furniture that could fall when shaken.

This includes securing bookcases and cabinets to the wall, removing unsecured items hanging over beds, like mirrors, or strapping your water heater to the wall.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department recommends identifying safe spots at home and at work, like sturdy tables and desks or small rooms and hallways.

Officials also encourage families to make sure everyone in the home knows important phone numbers and addresses.

All members of the household or business should identify escape routes and a designated meeting place outside of the building.

Taking a first aid class from your local Red Cross chapter is also recommended by the Fire-Rescue Department to keep your training current.

Officials encourage individuals and families to prepare an emergency disaster it that includes:

Flashlight Batteries Radio Water A three-day supply of non-perishable food Medicine An extra set of keys Extra clothes Emergency cash and credit cards

Homeowners should look for deep plaster cracks in ceilings and building foundations and repair them in preparation for an earthquake, according to the University of San Diego.

During an earthquake

The Fire-Rescue Department advises anyone experiencing an earthquake to drop to the ground under a table or desk for protection, cover your head and neck with your arm to protect yourself from flying debris, and hold on to a leg of the table or desk so it won’t slide away from you.

Avoid taking cover by windows, heavy furniture that could tip over, or in doorways, and do not use elevators.

If you’re outside or in your car, stay away from buildings, trees, streetlights and power lines.

Electricity may go out, according to USD officials, and sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on during an earthquake.

If you are trapped under debris, USD officials recommend covering your mouth with a handkerchief or clothes and staying still.

Avoid shouting unless absolutely necessary, as it can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust. Instead, tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you.

Be aware of possible tsunamis as well.

After an earthquake

SDG&E recommends restricting telephone use after an earthquake for family emergency needs or to report dangerous conditions.

Only dial 911 if there is a life-threatening emergency, and avoid making unnecessary trips. Always let others know where you are going.

Never touch downed power lines or broken gas lines — report them to SDG&E instead — and never use flames.

SDG&E also recommends boiling or purifying drinking water following an earthquake.
