ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Rowan County deputies successfully used a robot to lead to a peaceful surrender, the first time the technology was deployed in the field, the sheriff's office said.
On Monday, April 14, deputies responded to a welfare check at an apartment complex in Salisbury. The caller told deputies there was a man inside an apartment who had been drinking, was suicidal, and possibly armed with a gun.
Law enforcement contacted the man over the phone, but that was unsuccessful, and he eventually hung up on the negotiators.
Deputies then decided to deploy the robot to enter the residence to determine if the man was armed and to see if he could be persuaded to come out and surrender. Once the robot was inside, deputies could see inside the apartment, and negotiators were able to communicate with him through the robot.

Sheriff Allen received a grant from North Carolina in 2024, part of which was used to buy the robot that helped end this situation peacefully.
“Successful missions like these are the reason the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office must useevery opportunity available to seek funding to improve and modernize our equipment and services.” Sheriff Travis Allen said. “One cannot put a price on the life of a citizenor Deputy.”
