SEC Spring Football: Formats, Kickoff Times and Storylines to Follow ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

It’s been a little over 3 months since the college football season ended and Ohio State was crowned champion.

I hate to remind you of this, but we have a long way to go before the 2025-26 season kicks off, too. There is some good news though: Most SEC programs are currently in the middle of spring practice, which means diehard college football fans can see their teams in some form of action just before we enter the summer months. Obviously, it also gives fans a look at some of the most anticipated newcomers, whether they be freshmen or transfer portal additions.

Thirteen of the 16 SEC football programs are offering some kind of practice or scrimmage to end the spring session. Mizzou, Ole Miss and Texas elected to skip an open scrimmage or practice, though Ole Miss is holding a “Meet the Rebels” Day on April 12.

On this page you can find the start time, dates, TV/radio availability and a brief storyline to watch for each team as spring practice draws to a close.

April 12, 2025

Most SEC spring games take place this Saturday, April 12. Nine, to be precise. Unfortunately, a good portion of the spring events in action Saturday are simply open practices, though Florida, Tennessee, Georgia and a few others plan on playing a full scrimmage with a clock in front of fans.

Here’s a look at Saturday’s schedule. All times Eastern unless otherwise noted:

Kentucky

Kickoff, TV/Online: 10 a.m., None

Format and storyline to follow: Big Blue Nation can check out Kentucky’s revamped roster this Saturday during the Wildcats’ Spring Showcase. As with many other schools, the Wildcats are simply opting to open practice to fans instead of hosting a full scrimmage. As far as playmakers are concerned, Wildcats fans will want to monitor Jason Patterson and Alabama transfer Kendrick Law as aids to new QB Zach Calzada.

LSU

Kickoff, TV/Radio: 10:30 a.m. CT, None

Format and storyline to follow: In lieu of its annual spring game, LSU is hosting an open practice for fans, followed by a post-scrimmage autograph session with players and coaches. The Tigers added a number of new faces to their roster this offseason, including Nic Anderson out of Oklahoma and Barion Brown out of Kentucky. The pair were brought in to catch for Garrett Nussmeier, who is thought to be on track to be in the conversation for Heisman Trophy in 2025. Those in attendance will surely be looking out for the Tigers’ revamped offense against Harold Perkins, Whit Weeks and Co.

Auburn

Kickoff, TV/Radio: Noon CT, Auburn Sports Network

Format and storyline to follow: Auburn isn’t doing a typical Spring game this season, instead opting to open practice to fans this Saturday. There, fans will get a good look at the new QB-WR connection between Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold and star receiver Cam Coleman, one of the few bright spots from a 2024 season to forget. As far as Arnold is concerned, it’s possible that no QB in the SEC needed a change of scenery more. The Sooners passing attack was a complete joke last season, partially due to Arnold’s early struggles during his redshirt freshman year and partially due to myriad injuries in the receiving corps. The talent is certainly there, it’s just a matter of whether Hugh Freeze can unlock the potential.

Alabama

Kickoff, TV/Radio: Noon CT, None

Format and storyline to follow: Like their in-state foes, Alabama is not going to have a traditional spring game and will open practice to fans on the final day of the spring session. Why? Injuries. The Crimson Tide have been wrecked by injury so far this offseason. Kadyn Proctor hasn’t been practicing along the offensive line, Ryan Williams is not expected to participate on Saturday and the Crimson Tide are down to just 1 scholarship tight end. For that reason, the name of the game for Alabama is simply getting healthy.

Florida

Kickoff, TV/Online: 1 p.m., FloridaGators.com

Format and storyline to follow: Florida is throwing a big ol’ party for its spring event this year. With the basketball team fresh off a national championship victory, the Gators are set to take the field following a special celebration for Todd Golden’s crew. And while we’ve mentioned a few quarterbacks already in this article, perhaps no fanbase is more excited than Florida about its prospective QB1. DJ Lagway is an electric athlete and showed some true flashes last season. Can he put it together with Elijhah Badger and Chimere Dike out the door? Who will he develop chemistry with moving forward?

Georgia

Kickoff, TV/Radio: 1 p.m., 680 The Fan

Format and storyline to follow: Georgia will hold a full scrimmage in front of fans at 1 p.m. this Saturday. There’s a lot of new talent set to be on display Saturday afternoon, but this year’s G-Day will give Bulldogs fans their first look at 5-star defensive lineman Elijah Griffin, Georgia’s top-rated freshman signee. The hype for Griffin is truly off the charts, and the Bulldogs are already set to be without a few defensive linemen until the fall as they nurse injuries.

Oklahoma

Kickoff, TV/Radio: 1 p.m. CT, Sooner Sports Network

Format and storyline to follow: Oklahoma is not scheduled to play a full scrimmage in front of fans. Instead, Sooners fans will be treated to the Crimson Combine, which features drills, a look at practice and skill challenges. If Oklahoma is to be competitive in the SEC this season, it starts with Washington State transfer QB John Mateer. The Sooners had a truly dreadful passing attack last season (averaging 175 yards per game). Drawing conclusions from a spring combine would be unwise, but it’ll be the first chance for fans to see Mateer in action.

Tennessee

Kickoff, TV/Radio: 2 p.m., Vol Radio Network

Format and storyline to follow: Fans will pack into Neyland Stadium this Saturday to get a look at a Vols squad that is replacing a lot on both sides of the ball. A player to watch in Knoxville would definitely be Boo Carter, who is expected to play some snaps on offense this season after a phenomenal freshman season in the defensive backfield. Carter is shifty and could be used out of the backfield as a gadget guy while also being a potential target for returning QB Nico Iamaleava.

Vanderbilt

Kickoff, TV/Radio: 1 p.m. CT, 102.5 The Game

Format and storyline to follow: Vanderbilt is going to be playing football in front of fans Saturday, and is that hope in the air? The Commodores, thanks to Diego Pavia returning for another season, are entering the new season with some expectations. Perhaps the most interesting watch this Saturday will be in the backfield. Sedrick Alexander is likely to be Vanderbilt’s top running back, but we’ll also get to see MK Young for the first time in a Commodores uniform with AJ Newberry likely sidelined until fall. There’s definitely reason for optimism across Vanderbilt’s offense. Let’s just stay away from any pointless injures, shall we Vanderbilt?

April 18, 2025

One SEC team, South Carolina, will hold its spring game Friday night. Here’s a look at all relevant information for the Garnet & Black game.

South Carolina

Kickoff, TV/Radio: 7:30 p.m., None

Format and storyline to follow: South Carolina‘s Garnet and Black Spring Game will be held under the lights at Williams-Brice Stadium. There are a few storylines to keep track of this spring, but one to watch out for on Friday is definitely the battle for the backup QB job. We all know that LaNorris Sellers is going to lead the Gamecocks next season, but there are a number of candidates for the No. 2 job, including newcomer Air Noland.

April 19, 2025

Three more SEC programs will hold their Spring Football event on Saturday, April 19 — and all 3 are set to be traditional Spring Games. Here’s the latest info for Mississippi State, Arkansas and Texas A&M as we near the end of spring practice.

Mississippi State

Kickoff, TV/Online: Noon, None

Format and storyline to follow: Jeff Lebby was pretty direct following the first day of spring practice. “Our guys need to play,” he told reporters. He’s definitely not wrong. Mississippi State is set to put a completely different team on the field than the squad that finished 2-10 last season. The Bulldogs added 24 transfers and 27 freshmen/JUCO prospects to their team. A position group to follow this spring would be the offensive line, which lost 3 starters from last season. The game is won in the trenches, folks.

Arkansas

Kickoff, TV/Radio: 1 p.m. CT, None

Format and storyline to follow: Arkansas is one of a few SEC programs to be running a full Spring game format, where fans can get an early look at Taylen Green and the new-look Razorbacks offense. As alluded to, Arkansas feels good about its man under center, but it’s a little less certain exactly who he’s going to throw it to. There are a few options to be on the lookout for come April 19, including WR O’Mega Blake and transfer Raylen Sharpe.

Texas A&M

Kickoff, TV/Radio: 2 p.m. CT, SECN+

Format and storyline to follow: Another actual spring game! Televised, no less! The Maroon & White Game is as close to traditional as it gets in the SEC this year, and fans from all over the conference (especially College Station) can tune in to SEC Network+ to get an early glimpse at the unrefined 2025 Aggies. Personally, I’ll be watching QB Marcel Reed, who enters an uncertain era as Texas A&M‘s projected starter. Reed has obvious talent as a scrambler, but he’ll have to develop a reliable passing attack to ensure the Aggies can compete with the top of the SEC.
