As he enters his second tenure with the Arizona Cardinals, defensive lineman Calais Campbell says a lot has changed since his first tenure with the team concluded following the 2016 NFL season.

Campbell, who made his return to the Cardinals on Thursday, told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke while he feels like the same person, he’s a whole lot different in many ways.

“I have a lot more wisdom, (I have) way better perspective, stronger appreciation and I have a way better work ethic,” Campbell said.

Campbell said his perspective is much different from his last stint with the Cardinals since he is now a father to three children.

“Being a dad is the ultimate joy,” Campbell said. “The perspective is so much different and I’m like a whole different person now. The confidence is so much more and the responsibility is so much more.

“I told myself when I was younger, I loved to play the game but I had no reason not to play the game. Now that I’m taking time away from my kids and making those sacrifices, it has to matter.”

During his first tenure with the Cardinals from 2008-16, Campbell registered 56.5 sacks and 107 tackles for loss. He made the Pro Bowl twice and was named a Second Team All-Pro for his efforts in 2014 and 2016.

Since leaving the Cardinals, Campbell has registered 54 sacks and 80 tackles for loss in eight seasons between the Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins. He made the Pro Bowl four more times (2017-20) and was named a First Team All-Pro in 2017.

Campbell credits adjusting how he rushes the quarterback to his longevity in the NFL and the lessons he picked up along the way.

“I had to adjust the way I rushed the passer as I got older as I’m not as explosive as I used to be,” Campbell said. “When I was younger, I wish I had the knowledge that I have now because I could’ve been so much better.”

Campbell is coming off a season where he registered 5.0 sacks and 12 tackles for loss with the Dolphins. His sack total with the Dolphins would have tied Cardinals outside linebacker Zaven Collins for most sacks on the Cardinals last season.

When asked if year 18 would be his last in the NFL, the six-time Pro Bowler said he would see what happens after the season. Campbell added that his playing career has been on a year-to-year basis since his 10th season in 2017.

“I was pretty confident last year was going to be my last year,” Campbell said. “After like Week 4, I was like, ‘I don’t know, I still feel pretty good at this.'”
