Jillian Lauren, wife of Weezer bassist, had surgery before police shooting ...Middle East

News by : (mercury news) -

Jillian Lauren, a best-selling memoirist, true-crime writer and the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, had recently undergone a hysterectomy and other procedures related to a cancer diagnosis before she was caught up in an extraordinary sequence of events Tuesday, which involved a police chase through her Los Angeles neighborhood as officers pursued unrelated hit-and-run suspects, then her being shot by police after she reportedly pointed a gun at them.

Lauren, 51, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the police standoff but is now facing an attempted murder charge, according to news reports. She was treated at a nearby hospital and released on bond Wednesday, with a date to appear in court on April 30, NPR reported.

Five weeks earlier, Lauren revealed on Instagram that she had undergone surgery at Glendale Adventist Hospital for a “complicated operation” that involved two surgeries and “a full hysterectomy.” In this March 3 Instagram post, she shared a photo of herself either before or after surgery. “Yes, I have a little bit of the C word y’all,” she said. “I’m here to thank the incredible oncology team here, who pulled me through a complicated operation without a hitch.”

In a follow-up post on March 22, Lauren wrote that two other people she knew had undergone a similar procedure and “neither is with us here today.” But she assured her 16,000 followers: “I’m okay and healing today. … I thank you for your overwhelming support, and I love most of you. Kidding. I love you all. May we all be well tonight.”

Lauren’s followers are now filling a more recent Instagram post with comments that express shock about her involvement in Tuesday’s sad, bizarre incident but that also voice support for her and her family. “Omg girl what happened,” one person said. “You absolutely do not need this … I hoping it is sorted out quickly,” said another.

Media accounts of Tuesday’s incident also reflected an effort to “sort out” what happened to Lauren.

It all started with a misdemeanor hit-and-run on the Ventura Freeway Tuesday afternoon, NPR reported, citing a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

California Highway Patrol officers were pursuing three suspects who fled the scene when they radioed for backup around 3:25 p.m., police said. The suspects ran into the nearby Eagle Rock neighborhood, west of Pasadena. One suspect was seen running behind a house on Waldo Place — the cul de sac where Lauren lives with Shriner and their two sons, according to NPR. Shriner reportedly was not home at the time.

When officers reached the backyard of a house where the suspect was seen, they saw a woman, later identified as Lauren, in the yard next door. While she was not involved in the hit-and-run, she was holding a pistol. In the police reports, Lauren is referred to as Jillian Lauren Shriner.

“The officers ordered Shriner to drop the handgun numerous times; however, she refused,” the news release said. “Shriner then pointed the handgun at the officers, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Officers told local news outlet KTLA that Lauren was struck into the shoulder. She fled inside but eventually came back out. Local TV news helicopters — which had been hovering above the area of the car crash — showed the scene in Lauren’s neighborhood as she emerged from her home and lay face down in the middle of the street as officers approached her, carefully at first, then placed handcuffs on her.

Lauren was taken to a hospital for treatment for the gunshot wound, the Daily Beast reported. No one else was injured in the incident. A 9-millimeter handgun was subsequently found at Lauren’s home. Her husband’s band is scheduled to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this weekend, Newsweek also reported.

As for the hit-and-run crash, one of the three suspects was detained, cited and released by California Highway Patrol, NPR reported.

While Lauren was initially identified in news reports as Shriner’s wife, she has enjoyed an accomplished career in her own right, USA Today reported. She is the author of several books across multiple genres, starting with her 2010 memoir, “Some Girls: My Life in a Harem,” which chronicled her time spent in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah, brother of the Sultan of Brunei.

“At eighteen, Jillian Lauren was a NYU theater school dropout with a tip about an upcoming audition,” the book’s synopsis explains. “The ‘casting director’ told her that a rich businessman in Singapore would pay pretty American girls $20,000 if they stayed for two weeks to spice up his parties. Soon, Jillian found herself on a plane to Borneo, where she would spend the next eighteen months in the harem of Prince Jefri Bolkiah, youngest brother of the Sultan of Brunei.”

Lauren followed up this bestseller with another memoir in 2015, “Everything You Ever Wanted,” which recounted her “learning the steadying power of love” when she and her rock star husband, whom she married in 2005, adopt an Ethiopian child with special needs. Lauren also published a 2011 novel, “Pretty,” about an ex-stripper and “ex-pretty girl” left scarred after a car accident.

More recently, Lauren published a true crime book in 2023: “Behold the Monster,” for which she interviewed serial killer Samuel Little and gained his trust, after which he confessed to the murders of 93 women, “often drawing his victims in haunting detail as he spoke,” the book’s synopsis reads.
