Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal tore their visitors apart in Barcelona on Wednesday. Re-live a big win with the best Opta stats in our Barcelona vs Borussia Dortmund stats page.
As sure as water is wet and night follows day, Robert Lewandowski put his former employers Borussia Dortmund to the sword as Barcelona romped to a 4-0 win on Wednesday to put one foot in the Champions League semi-finals.
Lewandowski has made a habit of tormenting the club that gave him his break in the top five European leagues, and he scored twice more against them at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
The Polish striker scored twice on the night to take his tally to 29 goals in 28 matches against BVB in all competitions, two strikes more than he’s managed against any other club in his career.
It was ultimately a comfortable night for the Catalans, who now look near-certainties to reach the last four.
Barcelona looked purposeful from the start as they peppered the Dortmund goal in the early stages, managing more shots (four) in the first 10 minutes – they didn’t reach that tally as early in any prior UCL game this term.
The only surprising aspect of their opening goal was how long it took to arrive.
With 25 minutes on the clock, Pau Cubarsí diverted an instinctive first-time effort towards goal and Raphinha helped it over the line from close range.
Despite their domination, Barcelona were unable to extend their lead before the break – though it didn’t take them long after half-time to take a huge leap forward.
Raphinha rose at the back post to head across goal and Lewandowski nodded in from close range to become the first player in Champions League history to net 10 or more goals in a single campaign for three different clubs.
Lewandowski swept home Fermín López’s pullback just past the hour to kill off any hope of a Dortmund comeback – though Barcelona weren’t done yet.
Dortmund gave up position just inside their own half and Barcelona charged forward quickly before Raphinha fed a perfect pass through to Lamine Yamal to prod home.
In doing so, Raphinha equalled Lionel Messi’s Barcelona record for most goal involvements (19) in a single Champions League campaign, providing another reminder of the astonishing season being enjoyed by the Brazilian.
While the visitors had a late goal disallowed, there never looked to be any danger of a meaningful fightback, with this tie surely all but over.
