MLB star Octavio Dotel dies in nightclub incident.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has claimed the life of former Major League Baseball (MLB) star Octavio Dotel. At 51 years of age, Dotel was among at least 58 victims who perished during this catastrophic event, which also left approximately 160 individuals injured. The nightclub incident occurred while merengue artist Rubby Pérez was performing, highlighting the unpredictable nature of such gatherings and their potential dangers.

During the Jet Set disaster, Octavio Dotel was initially reported missing, sparking widespread concern. Hours later, relief washed over fans and family as news broke that he had been found alive amidst the debris. Hours later, CDN Noticias reported that Dotel passed away after sustaining injuries. While details about his death remain scarce, he was reportedly sitting in front of the stage, an area packed with heavy speakers and cords. 

Nelsy Cruz, who was in the middle of a term as governor of the Monte Cristi province in the Dominican Republic, was confirmed by her brother Nelson on Tuesday afternoon.

Dotel, 51, was initially found alive and pulled from the rubble, but later died while being taken to a local hospital.

Carolina Mejía de Garrigó, the city’s mayor, said Santo Domingo was waking “to a terrible tragedy,” offering her condolences to families “still waiting for news of their loved ones.”

The Jet Set nightclub is one of the Caribbean nation’s most famous venues, and its Monday night events are especially well attended.

Dotel's legacy in baseball is significant; he played for an impressive total of 13 different teams throughout his career, a record that reflects both his versatility and resilience as a player. Notably, he was part of the St. Louis Cardinals team that won the World Series in 2011. His untimely death has drawn condolences from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and many fans alike, underscoring the profound impact Dotel had on the sport and its community .
