As of March 2024, the United States has experienced a resurgence of measles cases, with 58 confirmed instances already matching the total for all of 2023. The decline in vaccination rates during the COVID-19 pandemic is largely attributed to this surge .
A child under 1 year old living in Denver has become the second confirmed measles case in the state in 2025, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed on its website Monday.

Symptoms can take up to 21 days to appear, so any exposed person who isn’t vaccinated should avoid public gatherings for three weeks, according to the health department.

The Archuleta County case was contagious from March 26 to April 3, according to the state health department. Others could have gotten the virus if they were at Wolf Creek Ski Area and Resort at any point from March 28 to 30; City Market at 165 Country Center Drive in Pagosa Springs, from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. March 31; or Pagosa Medical Group, 27B Talisman Drive in Pagosa Springs, from 9:05 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. March 31 or 3:45 to 6 p.m. April 2.
In Pueblo, while about 95% of school-aged children are vaccinated against measles, lower vaccination rates among kindergartners—approximately 84%—raise alarms about vulnerability within the community . Health officials emphasize that unvaccinated individuals face an extraordinarily high risk upon exposure to the virus. With public health at stake, it is imperative for communities to ensure high vaccination coverage to maintain herd immunity and protect those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons .
