SCOTTSDALE — Depending on who you ask, Arizona Cardinals fans are pretty divided on how wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.’s rookie year went.
On one hand, he managed to snag eight touchdowns in Year 1.
Then again, he fell short of many’s lofty expectations by failing to hit the 1,000-yard mark and not possessing the same kind of consistency he had at Ohio State.
Ask quarterback Kyler Murray, though, and he’s not pumping the brakes on what he and the pass catcher can accomplish heading into Year 2.
“For him to have eight touchdowns and feel like he didn’t even scratch the surface, that’s saying something,” Murray told Arizona Sports’ Cardinals Corner from Salt River Fields on Tuesday. “Obviously, me and him have to be better and we will be better. But I loved where he was mentally at the end of the season.
“Being more open, being more comfortable with the guys in the locker room, being more comfortable with me, being more comfortable just to speak his mind within the receiving room with (Israel Woolfork and Drew Terrell).”
How can Kyler Murray, Marvin Harrison Jr. improve their connection?
As for the biggest area Murray and Harrison must continue to nail down? Communication.
Week 1 was a good example of that.
After Harrison’s one-catch NFL debut in a Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the wide receiver didn’t quite open up to his signal caller about just how fast the game was for him until weeks later.
For the duo to take that next step, that can’t happen moving forward. And from how Murray sounds, that won’t be the case given the work they’ve put in since.
“I understand him in the sense of he’s got this name and he wants to just come in and prove himself,” Murray told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke on Tuesday. “People say he’s not talkative. Well, they would have said I wasn’t talkative my rookie year, either, because all I wanted to do was come in and show guys I’m worth where they picked me and who I am.
“So, I understand that part of his personality. But as he gets more comfortable, he’s going to continue to grow. I truly believe that.”
