Walton Goggins Went to Thailand to Grieve Years Before 'White Lotus' Death ...Middle East

Walton Goggins‘ experience filming Rick’s journey — and untimely death — for The White Lotus came two decades after he was in Thailand mourning his late wife.

During the Sunday, April 6, episode of the hit HBO series, Rick (Goggins) died after confronting Sritala (Lek Patravadi)’s husband, Jim (Scott Glenn), who unbeknownst to him turned out to be his father. The tragic end to Rick’s story — which included the death of his devoted girlfriend Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) — came two decades after Goggins was in Thailand for a different but just as emotionally difficult reason.

Goggins made a rare comment about traveling overseas after wife Leanne Kaun‘s death in the early 2000s. “I had someone in my life that committed suicide,” he told GQ in February. “And she was my wife. It’s a very complicated story.”

The actor got married to Kaun in 2001. Three years later, she went missing.

“Ultimately it was revealed, the decision that she’d made,” Goggins said. “And yeah — I thought it was really unrecoverable for me. Life on the other side of that. And I spent the next three years looking for an excuse — not to end it, but certainly putting myself in situations that were questionable, not with drugs or anything like that, just life experiences and traveling.”

While grieving, Goggins chose to go “over the world” to Vietnam, Cambodia and India. But initially, Goggins said, he started his travels in Thailand, which came two decades before he returned to film season 3 of The White Lotus.

“The first island we were staying on, I realized, ‘I’ve been on this road before,’” he recalled. “And then the next island we went to, I realized, ‘I’ve definitely been on this beach before. I know this boardwalk.’ And all of the things kept coming back.”

Goggins’ last night of shooting, which took place in Bangkok, reminded him of the connection.

“We pulled up to this dock and I was like, ‘I know this dock. What? OK. Yeah. No. I know this. Oh my God,'” he shared. “‘That’s the room I stayed in 20 years ago. That’s my balcony. That’s where I was the very first day I came here, 20 years ago, and in so much f***ing pain, man.'”

He continued: “We got out of the boat and that’s where we were filming. All of the equipment was literally right in front of the hotel that I’d picked 20 years ago on the internet, on this little bitty road in this little bitty neighborhood. I don’t know. I think I haven’t had the time to fully unpack the symmetry between those two people showing up at the same place, separated by 20 years. And a wife and a kid and peace and all the rest of it.”

Goggins later found a second chance at love with filmmaker Nadia Conners, whom he married in 2011. The couple expanded their family and now share a son. While speaking with GQ, Goggins was asked if he felt like he was “the same guy” who initially visited Thailand, two decades later.

“I mean, I thought about that on the day,” Goggins added. “I thought, ‘God, I wish I could hug that guy.’ I wish I could whisper in his ear, ‘You’re going to be OK. Life continues, and it continues for everybody if you can just hold on and lean into it and keep walking the walk that you’re walking, and keep looking for the answers.’”
