WADESBORO, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – The Town of Wadesboro continues to grieve the loss of K-9 Officer Blitz, who was killed in the line of duty last week.
Police Chief Jason Eschert told Queen City News he asked the district attorney from nearby Montgomery County to conduct a separate investigation into what happened. He said it’s because the State Bureau of Investigation cannot, since it was not another officer who was shot.
PREVIOUS: Anson County K9 fatally shot after chase, case under investigationThe dog was killed in the line of duty on April 2 after a chase spanning Anson and Montgomery counties. He was shot and killed by his handler, but details surrounding what exactly happened are still unclear. It has since sparked a social media frenzy.
The American Flag at Wadesboro Town Hall is still at half staff after Mayor Fred Davis called for the community to reflect on the contributions of K-9 Blitz.
The Wadesboro Police Department introduced us to Blitz on March 11, sharing that the dog specialized in obedience, tracking, apprehension, article searches, building searches and narcotics detection. He was donated to the department by a handler based in Salisbury.
One person we spoke with, who asked to be anonymous, said more questions need to be asked about the dog’s background and how he responded to his new handler.
“This, I’m sure, has been an experience in every major city with a K-9 unit. I’m sure this is not a freak thing that happened. I’m sure it happens, I just don’t think it’s been made this big of a deal elsewhere.”
Anson County Sheriff Scott Howell shared a statement that his deputies were there as backup during the chase, but once the suspect was in custody, his deputies backed off.
“This was something that should have never happened with a proper training protocol and K9 assignment,” Howell said.
Queen City News tried reaching out by phone, email and social media to the man who donated K-9 Blitz to the department and he has not returned our requests.
Eschert expects the report from the Montgomery County DA to be released soon.
