Kyler Murray says he’s ‘never played with a tight end like’ Trey McBride ...Middle East

Kyler Murray has seen a lot in his six seasons as the Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback, with little ranking ahead of Trey McBride’s emergence.

When he joined Arizona Sports from Salt River Fields — where he’s preparing for his first celebrity softball game that will include McBride — Murray had only the highest praise for a partner he called a true safety blanket.

“I’ve never played with a tight end like Trey,” Murray told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke on Tuesday. “They say growing up when you play quarterback that the tight end is the quarterback’s best friend, and this guy right here is the true definition of that.

“Doesn’t matter if he’s covered, which most of the time he’s not ’cause he runs great routes. But this dude is super athletic, he loves the game.”

Now the highest-paid tight end in NFL history, McBride provided a team-high 63 first downs for his signal caller in 2024. He also racked up team highs in catches (franchise-record 111) and receiving yards (1,146).

However, his fit in the offense wasn’t easy to picture when offensive coordinator Drew Petzing first arrived in 2023 with head coach Jonathan Gannon after McBride was a 2022 draft pick from the previous regime.

Murray proud of Trey McBride’s evolution

Zach Ertz was entrenched as the Cardinals’ starting tight end for McBride’s rookie season, though his 2022 campaign ending with a torn ACL and MCL provided a window for McBride to contribute as a rookie.

It was then that McBride hauled in 26 of his 29 rookie-season receptions for 241 of his 265 receiving yards, as well as his lone touchdown from the season.

“It’s just great to see his maturation because I remember when he came in as a rookie and he didn’t get as many reps as he would’ve liked to obviously with Zach being there,” Murray said. “But coming from being a wide-eyed rookie … having those rookie mishaps to now being a guy who can correct other guys and get us in the right stuff and tell people what they’re doing, it’s a beautiful thing to see.”

And what about the market-setting extension that placed McBride at the top of the NFL’s loaded tight ends group?

“He deserves every penny of it,” Murray said. “Personally, I believe he’s the best in the league. I think he’s going to grow, and I think the sky’s the limit, not only for me and him, but just as a unit … I love our receiving corps and I love our offense.”
