OC baseball Top 25: Santa Margarita moves up to No. 2 ...Middle East

This week’s Orange County high school baseball rankings, as of Tuesday, April 8.

Notable this week: Huntington Beach stays in the top spot after a three-game sweep of Corona del Mar in the Sunset League. … Trinity League play began last week. The surprising result was Orange Lutheran getting swept by St. John Bosco in the three-game series. …Cypress reached the final of the National Classic. … Woodbridge moves up three places after winning the Ryan Lemmon Invitational tournament.

BASEBALL TOP 25

(Records through Monday, April 7)

1. Huntington Beach (12-1): The Oilers swept Corona del Mar in a three-game series in the Sunset League. The scores were 4-2, 4-3 and 2-0. Senior Trent Grindlinger hit two home runs and drove in four runs. His brother, sophomore Jared Grindlinger, had three hits including a home run and pitched three scoreless innings. Huntington Beach this week will be in North Carolina to play in the National High School Invitational tournament. The Oilers have won the NHSI twice, in 2016 and 2023, and are 20-8 in NHSI tournament games.

2. Santa Margarita (10-5): The Eagles moves up a spot in the rankings after winning two of three games in a Trinity League series against Mater Dei. Their victories were by scores of 6-2 and 9-4, the loss was 2-1. Brody Schumaker was 6 for 13 in the series with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Santa Margarita plays surging St. John Bosco in a three-game league series this week.

3. Orange Lutheran (11-4): The Lancers were swept by St. John Bosco in a three-game Trinity League series. It was not long ago that a three-game sweep of Bosco by Orange Lutheran was an unfathomable event. The Lancers have a three-game league series this week against JSerra.

4. Mater Dei (11-4): The Monarchs lost two of three in a Trinity League series against Santa Margarita. They have lost four of their past five games. Mater Dei plays Servite in a three-game league series this week.

5. Foothill (14-5): The Knights went 2-2 in the Ryan Lemmon Invitational. They lost close games to Yucaipa and to eventual champion Woodbridge and finished with wins over Laguna Beach and Northwood. Senior Gavin Lauridsen gave Foothill its eight shutout of the season when he pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts in the 2-0 win over Laguna Beach. Evrett Rycroft had a home run and three RBIs in the tournament. Foothill plays El Dorado twice this week in the Crestview League, starting Wednesday at El Dorado.

6. Cypress (11-8): The Centurions were victorious in the first three rounds of the National Classic before losing to Aquinas 2-1 in the championship game. Senior pitcher Aiden Franco struck out 10 over 5.1 innings in a win over Arlington. Noah Johnson was 8 for 13 in the tournament with two doubles and seven RBIs and Gary Hennessy  went 4 for 8 with five RBIs. Cypress opens a two-game Crestview League series Wednesday against Villa Park.

7. JSerra (7-6): The Lions started Trinity League play by winning two of three games against Servite, a series that included a 2-1 loss for the Lions and a 5-2 win in nine innings and a 3-1 victory. JSerra plays Orange Lutheran this week in a three-game league series.

8. Villa Park (13-4): The Spartans went 3-0 in the Ryan Lemmon Invitational, including wins of 1-0 over Salem Hills of Utah, 11-6 over Fullerton and 4-0 over Pacifica. Pitcher Jack McGuire struck out six batters in his five shutout innings, Erza Ornelas was 4 for 6 with two RBIs and Joe Ramirez was 3 for 7 with two RBIs. Villa Park plays a two-game Crestview League series against Cypress this week.

9. Los Alamitos (13-3-2): The Griffins won two of three games against Newport Harbor in the Sunset League. They lost the first game 6-4 before turning on the offense with wins of 8-0 and 10-0. In the latter win Cade Barnett hit a two-run triple and scored three runs, Wyatt Joyce had two hits including a two-run double and Devin Porch hit a two-run double. Los Alamitos plays Corona del Mar in three league games this week.

10. El Dorado (15-4): The Golden Hawks were 3-1 in the National Classic. Xavi Cadena had six hits and three RBIs in the tournament, and Logan Steenburgen struck out eight over six innings of pitching in a win over Bingham of Utah. El Dorado is home Wednesday against Villa Park to start a two-game Crestview League series.
