The Masters will have to crown a champion without Tiger Woods this year.
But Woods’ best performances are forever part of the history at Augusta National Golf Club, and his five titles still create human inspiration.
Tiger Woods won a one-hole playoff to claim the 2005 MastersLegendary broadcaster Bob Bubka exclusively described to talkSPORT what Woods was like at his Masters peak, comparing it to a larger-than-life figure descending from above.
“When Tiger got on the golf course … he was holier than thou,” said Bubka, talkSPORT’s voice of golf.
“A presence that you never felt before, you never felt afterwards. I mean, it was just an incredible, incredible feeling.”
Woods won’t compete in the 2025 Masters while recovering from an Achilles rupture.
The 49-year-old golfer felt a sharp pain in his left Achilles while training.
“The surgery went smoothly, and we expect a full recovery,” Dr. Charlton Stucken said in a statement.
Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Ludvig Aberg Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are the favorites to win at Augusta this year.
Woods, who has won $120 million in career PGA Tour earnings, captured the Masters in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2019.
The 14-year drought between green jackets ended in ’19 when Woods held off Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele by one stroke to win at 13-under.

“It felt like that was a moment we were lucky to see again.”
One of Woods’ most iconic Masters moments also led to the eventual creation of Netflix’s Full Swing golf documentary series.
“The chip-in at 16 in 2005 against Chris DiMarco is probably most electric golf shot in history,” said Mumm, who was able to show an up-close look at The Masters.
“When I was in college, I was trying to be a director and I made a spec commercial where I brought in a bunch of random people and I showed them that clip, and just filmed their faces watching it.
“You can’t help but crack a smile when that ball goes in. It’s just — it’s an electric moment. … The drama of watching a ball roll across the green and fall in the hole, that’s one of the unique dramas in golf.

“So, to me, that chip-in at 16 remains one of the greatest moments in all of golf, and definitely my favorite Tiger moment.”
Whether the 82-time PGA Tour winner will ever approach his old form is a question that currently can’t be answered.
Woods, who joined the tour in 1996 and has 199 top-10 finishes, hasn’t won a tournament since the 2019 Zozo Championship.
“From talking to other players who play with them, it’s clear he still has all the shots,” Mumm said.
“He can hit it just as well as anybody. But obviously he’s been through a lot physically and, unfortunately, he’s had so many surgeries.”
Like golf fans across the globe, Mumm would love to see Woods “run it back” again at the Masters.
“I think he would love to give fans another one of those moments before he kind of hangs it up,” Mumm said
“I’m just like all of us — I’m rooting for it.”
