Jay North, known for playing Dennis the Menace, dies at 73

Jay North, the actor renowned for his portrayal of Dennis Mitchell in the 1959-1963 sitcom “Dennis the Menace”, passed away at the age of 73 after a prolonged battle with colon cancer ( North's career commenced at an early age, as he was cast in this iconic role when he was merely six years old. The show's popularity catapulted him to fame and made him a beloved figure among audiences . Despite his success during childhood, North later faced challenges typical of many child actors transitioning into adulthood.

Florida, after battling colon cancer, said Laurie Jacobson, a longtime friend, and Bonnie Vent, who was his booking agent.

“He had a heart as big as a mountain, loved his friends deeply. He called us frequently and ended every conversation with ‘I love you with all my heart,’” Jacobson wrote in a tribute on Facebook.

North was 6 when he was cast as the smiling troublemaker in the CBS sitcom adaptation of Hank Ketcham’s popular comic strip that took place in an idyllic American suburb.

North said that he was not sad about the show’s cancellation. “Between the pressures of the business and Joe’s  dying, I became very serious, very morbid and very withdrawn from the world. I was the antithesis of the little kid that I played on the television show,” he said, as quoted by Hollywood Reporter.

During Dennis the Menace, North faced physical and emotional abuse from his aunt, who was also his legal guardian. After Dennis the Menace, Jay North appeared as a voice actor in The Banana Splits Adventure Hour as well as The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show. His first lead role in a film was in the 1966 feature Maya. In 1974, he was part of the R-rated thriller The Teacher, which starred Angel Tompkins. North also served briefly in the U.S. Navy.

Provost was referring to the inordinate amount of work that was pushed on North at such a young age. He was eight when Dennis the Menace, based on the comic strip by Hank Ketcham, debuted in 1959.

Another child star, Bill Mumy, best known for his role as Will Robinson on TV's Lost in Space, also posted a tribute.

"RIP Jay North. We only socialised a few times, but the 'Child Star Club' is a small and always tightly connected group. It's an experience that only a few can truly relate to and understand from the inside."

More recently, North worked with Paul Petersen in the The Donna Reed Show actor’s organization, A Minor Consideration, to help former childhood stars deal with real life; served as a correctional officer in Florida; and showed up in the 2003 film Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.
