But there’s nothing worse than settling down in your favourite deck chair with a cup of tea and a good book, only to spot a pesky rat peering out from behind the bushes.

Not only are the critters dirty and unsightly, but they can also wreak havoc on your home and garden, and can even carry harmful diseases.

Although your first thought might be to put down poison or use traps, there are a number of natural methods you can try instead, which are cheaper.

Additionally, rat poison is toxic to pets and this method doesn’t eliminate the problem, as more rats will continue to flock to your garden.

Taking to TikTok, @toprecipe_andtips revealed that you can banish rats from your home and garden, by using a bar of soap.

Soap is something you probably already have in the bathroom, but if not, you can pick up a bar from Savers for 50p.

The homeowner revealed that all you need to do is great a small bit of the soap and then add a splodge of toothpaste to the mixture.

Sprinkle two spoonfuls of refined sugar into the mix, and then combine all of the ingredients together.

Finally, add a bit of stale bread to the concoction and mix it in again, before distributing the mixture around your home.

“This is a powerful homemade poison for rats,” the TikToker explained.

“The bread and sugar will attract the animals, but when they consume it, the other ingredients will be lethal to them.”

The homeowner advised placing the mixture in strategic places, where rats may try and access your home from, such as near drains.

The video has caused a stir on social media, racking up over 15 million views.

TikTok users raced to the video’s comments section, to share their thoughts on the budget hack.

Keep pests out all summer

IF you want to ensure that your home is pest free this summer, here's what you need to know.

Hornets and wasps – hate the smell of peppermint oil so spraying this liberally around your patio or balcony can help to keep them at bay.

Moths – acidic household white vinegar is effective for deterring moths. Soak some kitchen roll in vinegar and leave it in your wardrobe as a deterrent.

Flying ants – herbs and spices, such as cinnamon, mint, chilli pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, or garlic act as deterrents.

Mosquitoes – plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mozzies inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender and lemongrass.

One person said: “This is unbelievable! I will try it out.”

A second person said: “Fantastic, amazing!”

A third person added: “Great idea!”

If you’re looking for a more humane way to rid your home of rats, you can also try planting plants such as peppermint in the garden, as the critters can’t stand the smell.

You can also try deterring the pests by making a homemade repellent out of chilli flakes.

And rats can’t stand the smell of onions and garlic, so planting these in your garden should help as well.
