Six students from UC San Diego have run into problems with immigration amid the ongoing crackdown by President Donald Trump against those from foreign countries.

Five students, “without warning,” Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said in a campus notice sent Friday, had their F-1 visas terminated the day before.

“The federal government has not explained the reasons behind these terminations,” Khosla wrote. “The students have been notified and we are working directly with them to provide support.”

Another student, he said, was detained at the border, denied entry to the U.S. and deported.

He noted that “recent federal immigration actions, whether occurring locally, within the UC system or across the country, are distressing for many in our campus community,” while repeating the campus’ “strong support for our valued Triton international students.”

F-1 visas allow foreign nationals to enter the U.S. to study at colleges or universities, other academic institutions or language training programs.

The Trump administration has been aggressive in targeting illegal immigration, but has expanded its crackdown by suspending refugee programs and including those with legal residency in the government’s net.

Those who have been detained or deported include tourists, academics, artists and even U.S. citizens.

Trump campaigned on a promise to deport foreign students involved in pro-Palestinian protests, and federal agents started by detaining Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil, a green-card-holder and activist who was prominent in protests at Columbia last year.

In the past two weeks, like those at UCSD, officials from colleges around the country have discovered international students have had their entry visas revoked and, in many cases, their legal residency status terminated without notice — including students at Arizona State, Cornell, North Carolina State, the University of Oregon, the University of Texas and the University of Colorado.

A UC Santa Barbara faculty member reported on social media that she had counted 25 students in the University of California system who had their F-1 visas revoked.

She included the UCSD students, along with eight at UCLA, five at UC Irvine, four at UC Berkeley and three at UCSB.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
