Nine-man Crystal Palace held on to secure a narrow, nervous and dramatic win over rivals Brighton in a highly eventful game at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
In a fractious affair, Palace had Eddie Nketiah and Marc Guéhi sent off, but they clung on despite playing for almost 25 minutes with a numerical disadvantage. They only had to play for five minutes with nine versus 11, however, as Brighton were reduced to 10 men when Jan Paul van Hecke was dismissed in second-half injury-time.
It was the first time that three red cards were shown in a Premier League game since April 2013 (Southampton vs West Brom).
The game got off to a lightning-quick start as Jean-Philippe Mateta sent a wonderful left-footed strike into the top corner to open the scoring after just 139 seconds, but Brighton equalised through Danny Welbeck just after the half-hour mark.
Palace’s eventual winner came via a deflected effort from Daniel Muñoz 10 minutes into the second half, but that was only the start of the drama.
Nketiah was introduced from the substitutes’ bench on 68 minutes, and took just 81 seconds to pick up his first yellow card, booked by referee Anthony Taylor for simulation. Less than 10 minutes later, he received his marching orders for a clumsy foul on Van Hecke.
Guéhi then saw red for a high foot in midfield just before the fourth official signalled there would be 12 minutes of additional time. Palace faced playing that entire time two men down on their fierce rivals.
Van Hecke, however, booked in the first half, took down Daichi Kamada just five minutes later for a tactical yellow, and made it nine vs 10.
Brighton had chances to equalise but Dean Henderson stood firm in the Palace goal to secure a win that damages Brighton’s European hopes and reduces the gap between the teams in the Premier League table to just four points. Palace also have a game in hand as we enter the season’s final straight.
