LOS ALAMITOS – Los Alamitos on Friday played the type of baseball game that Griffins coach Scott Talanoa had been waiting to see for a long time.

“That was our first complete game since the fall and the winter,” Talanoa said.

He had just watched Los Alamitos beat Newport Harbor 10-0 in a Sunset League game at Los Alamitos High.

The Griffins won two of the three games in this week’s league series against the Sailors. Newport Harbor won the first game Tuesday 6-4 at Los Alamitos and the Griffins won the second game 8-0 Wednesday at Newport Harbor.

Los Alamitos is 13-3-2 overall and in second place in the seven-team Sunset League with a 6-3 league record. Huntington Beach is in first place. Newport Harbor is 10-4 overall and 6-3 in league.

Los Alamitos senior third baseman Cade Barnett had two hits, including a two-run triple, and scored three runs. Senior left fielder Wyatt Joyce had two hits including a two-run double. Senior right fielder Devin Porch hit a two-run double.

Four Los Alamitos pitchers combined to shut out Newport Harbor for the second game in a row. The Sailors were held to three hits.

Junior right-hander Hudson Binder started and went 2.2 innings, senior left Ryan McKemy threw for 2.1 innings, sophomore right-hander Logan Anderson pitched the sixth inning and senior lefty Ethan Maddies finished it up in the seventh.

“We hit well, we pitched outstandingly, we did execute some things,” Talanoa said. “It was a complete team victory. I’m super proud of our kids.”

Newport Harbor committed three errors, all of which contributed to Los Alamitos runs.

Barnett scored the first run for Los Alamitos in the first inning. He hit a single, stole second base and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Los Alamitos added two runs in the second inning. With two outs Cruz D’Errico reached on an error, James Reveles followed with a single and both scored on Porch’s double to right field for a 3-0 lead.

Reveles laid down a perfectly-placed squeeze bunt to send in Rowan Shelley for a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning.

The Griffins scored three runs in the fifth. Joyce’s triple drove in Barnett and Tyler Smith and Shelley’s sacrifice fly brought home Joyce to make it 7-0.

Joyce is the team leader in RBIs with 16.

Barnett’s sixth-inning triple drove in Brooks Bergeron and Porch. Barnett scored on Smith’s ground out for the 10-0 lead.

Joyce also praised the Griffins’ performance.

“Pitching was really good and we had quality at-bats all the way through,” Joyce said. “Even our outs were good.”

Joyce wants more of it.

“We need to be more consistent,” Joyce said. “Do what we did here every day.”

Senior third baseman Wyatt Gahm had two singles for the Sailors.

Los Alamitos is No. 10 in the Orange County Top 25 and Newport Harbor is No. 13. The CIF Southern Section computer rankings of all 395 baseball teams in the section have Newport Harbor at No. 18, Los Alamitos at No. 22.

Next week Los Alamitos plays Corona del Mar in a three-game league series starting Tuesday at Los Alamitos High.

Newport Harbor will play in the Santa Ana Elks Tournament that begins Saturday. The Sailors will be home against Ontario Christian at 11 a.m.
