The move comes after Snow White's disappointing reception at global box offices, as well as its generally mixed reviews from longtime Disney fans and critics alike. With an estimated budget of $270 million, Snow White has thus far grossed only $146.5 million worldwide. Given its myriad of poor reviews, it's currently on track to become a major financial loss for the entertainment industry's premiere animation powerhouse.
Though Disney had toyed with the idea of a live-action remake based on Tangled for years, Snow White has caused them to re-evaluate their live-action projects for the immediate future. Previously, the film had entered early production phases in December of last year. Michael Gracey, the filmmaker behind The Greatest Showman and Better Man, had been attached to direct, with Thor: Love and Thunder screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson set to provide the script. There is no clear date on when -- or even if -- the movie will resume production, although it's likely Disney is waiting to see how its upcoming live-action remakes fare upon their release.
As of yet, Disney will continue to move forward with the planned releases of their two latest live-action remakes. Lilo & Stitch (based on the celebrated 2002 animated film of the same name) is scheduled to debut in theaters on May 23. Meanwhile, Moana (based on Disney's hit 2016 film) is currently scheduled to arrive on July 10, 2026.
