Viktor Gyokeres is open to a move to Arsenal this summer, talkSPORT understands.

The Gunners are set to open talks with Sporting after identifying Gyokeres as a more attainable option than Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.

Gyokeres is understood to be impressed with the Arsenal project.

The Swede has been in superb form for the Portuguese champions since arriving at the club from Coventry City in a £16.7million deal in 2023.

The 26-year-old has netted a staggering 86 goals in 93 games for the Lisbon club including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League last November.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is in desperate need of firepower in attack and has identified the striker as the ideal candidate to lead the Gunners’ frontline next season.

And the Spaniard would have been impressed with the striker’s most recent exploits – a stunning panenka penalty in Sporting’s 2-0 Portuguese Cup semi-final win over Rio Ave on Thursday.

The Gunners have long been linked with a move for Gyokeres and according to European football expert Andy Brassell, the Swede would provide Arsenal with everything they would need from a striker.

“He was coached very, very well by Ruben Amorim and has continued on his path since under Joao Pereira and Rui Borges,” Brassell told talkSPORT’s Trans Europe Express.

“The fact is, he’s got everything you want in a centre-forward. He’s quick, he’s strong, he’s big, he’s not easily intimidated, he can create as well as score.

“Gyokeres has everything you could possibly need, and a lot of people I know that watch the Championship pretty closely, were surprised that it took Sporting to really have a go [on him].

“And I think Amorim had to beg the board really to buy him, it was a record transfer fee for Sporting of €20m [£16.7m] and has paid back several times over.

Gyokeres just can’t stop scoring in Portugal and could answer Arsenal’s problemsAFP

“And when they sell him, they will sell him for a conservative estimate of at least three times that.

“So I think what you’re seeing already is Andrea Berta, the new sporting director who has joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid, he has clearly got his say on things.”
