Mumbai Indians (MI) are standing firmly behind their talisman, Rohit Sharma, despite his underwhelming start to IPL 2025. The veteran opener, known for his effortless stroke play and thundering white-ball-hitting abilities, has struggled to make an impact this season. The Hitman has made just 21 runs at 7.00 after three games thus far, registering scores of 0 (vs CSK), 8 (vs GT), and 13 (vs KKR). While the numbers paint a grim picture, MI’s batting coach Kieron Pollard insists that the ‘Hitman’ still has plenty to offer.
Cricket 1 min Rohit Sharma must break free of 4-year-old 1st over jinx, else a liability to MI in IPL 2025What did Pollard say about Rohit Sharma?
“There are times when you have a couple of low scores but, you know, he’s earned the right as an individual to now enjoy his cricket and not be pressurized in certain situations,” Pollard said about Rohit Sharma on the eve of the LSG vs MI clash.
“So let’s not judge on a couple low scores. In cricket, you know, we fail more than we succeed and I’m sure we’ll be singing out his praises when he comes out and gives us that big score and then we’ll be on to the next hot topic.“
The weight of expectations for Rohit
Rohit’s struggles come at a time when T20 cricket is evolving rapidly, with fearless young batters redefining the format. Despite stepping away from T20Is after leading India to World Cup glory in 2024, the IPL remains a different beast, demanding consistency at the top. His dismissals this season—against Siraj’s peach in Ahmedabad, Khaleel Ahmed in Chennai, and a soft shot off Andre Russell in Mumbai—have exposed a vulnerability against the moving ball early in his innings.
Yet, MI are backing their senior-most batter to turn things around. The franchise has built its legacy on trusting its stalwarts, and Rohit is no exception.
“Personally, I’ve played alongside Rohit since under-19 cricket and he has forged his name and etched his name in history, in the record books, in different situations, different formats of the game. He’s a legendary name in his own right and as an individual as well.”
2 tales of Rohit Sharma
It’s really baffling to see Rohit Sharma’s IPL numbers, especially when you compare them to his incredible performances in international cricket. Despite being one of the most successful batters in IPL history, his stats are surprisingly average. But when he’s playing for India, he’s a completely different player – dominant, consistent, and almost unstoppable.
What’s even more puzzling is that he’s an opener who often gets to bat on flat, batting-friendly pitches, so you’d expect him to make the most of those opportunities. But for some reason, it just hasn’t clicked for him in the IPL.
To give context, Rohit played 55 innings for India in T20Is from 2020 until his retirement in 2024. He scored 1598 runs at an average of 35 (well above 24.8) and at a strike rate of 145.53 (well above 131.9). Rohit’s ODI numbers have been mind-boggling as well in the same period. He has hammered 2224 runs at 47.31 and 112.83 across 51 one-day innings. For a player of his talent, you’d expect Rohit to club elite bowlers for fun in the IPL.
