The US military operation against the Huthi group in Yemen continues to escalate, without any clear reason or even defined goals.
Iran’s silence is no less strange. The government of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is keeping uncharacteristically quiet towards the operation, despite the fact that the Huthi group is deeply aligned with them.
The Huthis are an Iranian proxy in the region, and later on have become a tool serving American and Israeli interests, utilized by both sides in multiple ways. This, of course, does not negate the fact that the group occasionally receives US strikes, often as a form of camouflage.
The idea that the Trump administration is fighting a war purely for Red Sea navigation safety is implausible. Such a claim is untenable because America’s global trade does not pass through the Red Sea, and if it does, it is in a negligible percentage.
Trade reports indicate that the proportion of American trade through the Red Sea does not exceed one percent.
Logically, America’s trade with Asia, for instance, can take the route around the Cape of Good Hope, as it is easier and shorter for them. However the situation is different for Europe and Russia, wherein the Red Sea is the shortest and easiest route.
We haven’t heard that Trump is concerned about the ease of European trade passing through this sea; in fact, the opposite is true. The US President’s relationship with Europeans since he entered the White House has been strained, and he seems to start every day looking for ways to trouble them in their own territories and keep them up at night.
As for Israel, we haven’t heard that the Huthi missiles have killed any Israelis or destroyed any buildings there.
It has all been a form of intimidation that hasn’t seriously harmed Israelis or even benefited the Palestinians in their cause.
What is certain is that Tel Aviv is secretly pleased, seeing the significant negative impact on the Suez Canal due to the Huthi attacks on ships at Bab al-Mandab.
Nothing makes the Israelis happier than the decline in the Canal’s revenues.
America’s talk about the military operation being to ensure the safety of navigation in the sea is meaningless, as its desire for navigational safety is not supported by logic or evidence.
Once these operations end, we will understand more about why they started in the first place and why they escalated. We will also know why the Iranian Supreme Leader maintained this strategic silence, if that is indeed the right way to describe it.
