Mohammed Siraj was pumped up and had a point to prove as he tore open the Royal Challengers Bengaluru batting line-up on debut for Gujarat Titans, reckoned India batting legend Virender Sehwag.
Cricket 8 mins Game over noise: Did GT’s Gill takes cheeky dig at Virat Kohli & RCB after silencing Bengaluru?Champions Trophy snub fired up Siraj against RCB?
Mohammed Siraj, who played for RCB from 2018 to 2024, turned up in GT colours and delivered one of his most polished spells in the Indian Premier League, finishing with 3 for 19 off 4 overs.
In a devastating first spell, Siraj picked the wickets of Devdutt Padikkal and Phil Salt to effectively shut the door on RCB after Virat Kohli had been dismissed cheaply by Arshad Khan.
Siraj came back for his final over to stop Liam Livingstone, RCB’s top-scorer on Tuesday, from causing further damage.
Sehwag, who was among the most destructive batters of his time, said Siraj was hurting from the Champions Trophy snub. He was overlooked for Harshit Rana – Japsprit Bumrah had already been ruled out because of an injury.
“He (Siraj) maintained his record with the new ball in Chinnaswamy. He gave away only 12 or 13 runs in the first three overs. He could’ve probably bowled the fourth over at the same time, too, he might have taken another wicket. He swings the new ball, and yesterday, he also got help from the wicket,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz

— Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) April 2, 2025“He has that fire. And somewhere I feel he is hurt that he wasn’t part of the Champions Trophy squad, and I saw that fire. That’s what we expect from a young fast bowler. ‘Yeah, you didn’t pick me? Now I will show you.’ I hope he continues with the same intensity and makes a comeback in the Indian team.”
Mohammed Siraj was named man-of-the-match for his stunning spell and he admitted to being emotional on his return to the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
“I was a little emotional, because I played here for seven years in the red jersey. Now it’s a different colour. I was a little nervous and a little emotional, too. But as soon as I got the ball in my hand, I was full on,” Siraj said.
Siraj was one of Virat Kohli’s main bowlers for nearly a decade and took 83 wickets for RCB before being released by the team last year. In November, GT bought him at the auction for Rs 12.25 crore.
