KKR, the defending champions are last on the IPL 2025 points table while SRH, the runners-up, find themselves at No.8.
This is still the first half of the Indian Premier League and there’s a long way to go but the two teams which enjoyed a dominant run to the final last year are already facing the heat.
Cricket 21 seconds Predicted SRH playing XI vs KKR: Travishek need to fire, all eyes on Zeeshan & ZampaKKR vs SRH – what’s changed for IPL 2024 finalists in 2025
Kolkata Knight Riders lost only 3 games on their way to a third championship last summer. In IPL 2025, they have already lost 2 out of their first 3 matches.
Sunrisers Hyderabad let loose their fire-packed batting line-up in the 2024 IPL and that paid rich dividends as the side stormed to the final – Travishek was a real thing and bowlers in the tournament were never sure what could unfold. Captains were worried – how do you stop that pair?
Cut to 2025, Abhishek Sharma, who has penned his name solidly as India’s first-choice opener in T20Is, has struggled in SRH’s first 3 matches, 2 of which they have lost. Scores of 24, 6 and 1 won’t ring the alarm bells just yet but there will be some concern around the team.
Both sides have issues to address this year and they are vastly different.
Pitch, inconsistency & more – KKR’s woes in IPL 2025
While KKR struggled to retain some of their stars from the 2024 triumph, they have also been bothered with the lack of support from the Eden Gardens pitch curator. The season opener between KKR and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens was disappointing for the hosts who want more turn for their spin-heavy bowling attack.
Shreyas Iyer, who led KKR to their third title, is on fire for Punjab Kings – having scored two fifties in their first two wins of the season. Iyer has also been in top form for India in the limited-overs formats and it’s clear to see why PBKS splurged the way they did on him in the auction.
KKR’s new captain, Ajinkya Rahane scored a fifty in the game against RCB but he is still far from his best – which can be pretty devastating.
KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo wasn’t pleased with the way his batters approached Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium and was quick to remind them that there is still a need to follow the basics of batting. How they do that against a good SRH bowling attack, still smarting from two successive defeats will hold they key to their success over the next few weeks.
SRH continue to unearth new gems
SRH, even with the likes of Pat Cummins, Mohammed Shami and Adam Zampa, have some flaws to iron out but honestly, they wil expect a lot more from their batters on home pitches which are suited to big-hitting.
Ishan Kishan, SRH’s newest recruit, made a sensational debut with an unbeaten 106 against Rajasthan Royals but has since made 0 and 2 against Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals.
Aniket Verma’s mind-numbing half-century against DC was of some solace to SRH who would also need Travis Head to lead this batting line-up with his fireworks up top. His partnership with Abhishek in 2024 dictated terms to bowlers throughout the summer and they need to find their mojo before time runs out.
