SAN JOSE — A dominant season continued Wednesday for the Live Oak softball team.

In a showdown at Piedmont Hills with first place on the line the Acorns came out on top 6-1.

Live Oak is now 11-1 overall and 6-0 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Santa Teresa Division. Piedmont Hills is 10-4, 5-1.

In 12 games Live Oak has scored 103 runs and allowed 16.

“We’re just really happy,” Live Oak coach Sarak Porras said. “The girls have great camaraderie. They’re really starting to gel and playing for each other.”

Sophomore hurler Julianna Altamirano pitched a five-hitter on the windy afternoon at Piedmont Hills. She struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

Allowing no walks is nothing new for her. Altamirano has struck out 82 and walked one in 43 innings this season. Repeat, 82 strikeouts and one walk on the season. How is that possible?

“(She) worked hard over the summer and came back with really good command,” Porras said.

Piedmont Hills pitcher Isabella Flores held the Acorns hitless the first two innings. But with two out in the third they strung together four singles and a walk to take a 3-0 lead.

Flores singled home Alicia Valladarez, who had reached on a bunt single, to get the Pirates on the board in the bottom of the inning. But that was all Altamirano gave up.

Live Oak added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh. Olivia Mixco, Kayla Tulowitzki and Quinn Hulber-Dana had two hits apiece. Tulowitzki and Ava Chapman drove in a pair of runs each.

“I definitely have a lot of respect for Live Oak,” Piedmont Hills coach Vince Torres said. “The teamwork they displayed. They didn’t make any errors, which I feel is the biggest difference. I look forward to playing them again and hopefully get a different result.”

Two years ago Live Oak won the Central Coast Section Division IV championship. But after a 6-17 campaign last season the team was moved down from the Mt. Hamilton to the Santa Teresa Division.

“We’re definitely going after the league title in this division and looking to go back up to the `A’ league next year,” Porras said.
