OSAA 5A & 6A State Championships

Beaverton, Oregon February 21-22, 2025 SCY (Short Course Yards) Full Meet Results

Caldera senior Campbell McKean was the highlight of the Oregon State Championships back in February. After setting the state records in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM at last year’s 5A State Meet. McKean decided to change his schedule for this year’s meet, swimming the 100 fly and 100 back instead.

He won both events, setting a new state record in one of them. He started with a victory in the boy’s 100 butterfly, where he finished in 46.52, breaking the old record set by Charley Page-Jones back in 2022 of 47.63 by more than a second. This was a new best time for him, before he went slightly faster swimming 46.46 in the event at the Boise Sectionals last month.

McKean, a 2025 Texas commit,  is well known for his ability to swim breaststroke and IM, but he has really been branching out this year, showing his versatility in a number of other events as well.

His 2nd event of the meet was the 100 backstroke which he won in 47.58, less than a tenth of a second off the state record time of 47.45 which was set by Marcus Gentry also back in 2022. This was also a new best time for McKean, about a second-and-a-half faster than his previous best of 4912 from the 2023 Speedo Sectionals in Federal Way.

He was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay, where he split 19.68 to help the team to a 3rd place finish, and the 400 freestyle relay, which also finished 3rd thanks to his 42.90 split.

On the 6A side, things were led by Nelson junior Drew Eubanks.

Eubanks, who has committed to Tennessee for the recruiting class of 2026, made a splash at the 2024 Winter Junior Championships, when he finished 5th in the 100 breast and 3rd in the 200 breast. He has continued to improve over the course of the season and peaked at the OSAA State meet, where he went 52.98 in the 100 breast to break McKean’s former state record time of 53.36. This was his 3rd straight time ever winning the event.

He also swam the 200 IM, where he finished 2nd to Sunset junior Luca Ignastecu’s 1:49.01 with his 1:50.43. This was just three-hundredths off his lifetime best of 1:50.40 from Winter Juniors last year.

There was one other OSAA state record from the 6A side of the meet. The Westview boys swam 1:33.11 in the 200 medley relay to break the previous record of 1:33.14 set by Glencoe just last year.

The relay was made up of two sophomores at the front and two seniors at the back. John Sommers, a sophomore, led off the relay in 34.68. His twin, Ethan Sommers, swam the breaststroke leg at 25.01. The seniors brought the relay home with Matthew So splitting 22.18 on the fly and Shawn Kim touching in 21.24 on the free, finishing just over three tenths ahead of the 2nd place Jesuit relay, and three-hundredths under the previous state record.
