Border Patrol San Diego Sector agents rescued two Mexican women stranded in the Otay Mountain wilderness amid harsh weather conditions early Friday.

The women, who had crossed into the U.S. illegally, were injured and without food or water when Mexican authorities alerted Border Patrol. One woman was pregnant, officials said.

Agents found them in a remote canyon about six miles east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, unable to walk due to ankle injuries.

Due to dense fog and low cloud cover, immediate extraction was impossible. Agents from the Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue Team stayed with the women overnight, constructing a makeshift shelter.

By morning, improved weather allowed a San Diego Sheriff’s Department helicopter to airlift the women to safety.

Both women received medical evaluations before being processed for removal from the U.S., officials said.

The rescue took place during a cold front in the San Diego region, where mountain temperatures dropped to near-freezing levels.

“I’m extremely proud of the Border Patrol agents who work tirelessly to safeguard our nation while also rendering aid to those in distress,” said San Diego Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey D. Stalnaker.

“The border region can be treacherous, with extreme weather and rugged terrain posing serious dangers. Entering illegally not only breaks the law but also puts lives at risk.”
