Richard Chamberlain, the iconic actor renowned for his portrayal of Dr. James Kildare in the 1960s television series “Dr. Kildare”, has passed away at the age of 90 due to complications following a stroke . His death marks the end of a significant era in television history. Chamberlain's role as a compassionate and dedicated doctor resonated with audiences and solidified his status as a leading man during his time. Beyond “Dr. Kildare”, he gained acclaim for performances in miniseries such as “Shogun” and “The Thorn Birds”, earning Golden Globe awards that underscored his versatility and talent .

But, after serving in the Korean War as an infantry clerk, Richard Chamberlain redirected his ambitions toward acting, a move that would define the next five decades of his life.

Locations and budgets helped shape the experience, of course, but so did Chamberlain’s screen presence. A Shakespearean actor in between TV roles, he was able to make the manners of decades or centuries before feel warm-blooded and lived-in. He was dignified enough to carry the stories’ grandeur, expressive enough to put them over as the finest grade of pulp.

Though he was a signature star of the 1980s, Chamberlain’s appeal was in a way a holdover of the 1960s and 1970s. He was emotive, with fine features that made a beautiful canvas for fervor and anguish and longing. He could rage and burst with passion, but his appeal was a different mold from the kind of beefy masculinity that would define the 1980s screen celebrity of Stallone and Schwarzenegger.

Chamberlain played the title role in “Hamlet” at England’s Birmingham Repertory Company and repeated it in a TV adaptation that appeared on NBC in the United States. He also appeared as Octavius in a film version of “Julius Caesar,” which co-starred Charlton Heston and Jason Robards.

After graduating, Chamberlain joined the US Army and served 16 months in Korea, where he earned the rank of sergeant.

Chamberlain is survived by his longtime partner Martin Rabbett.

“Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us,” Rabbett told CNN in a statement Sunday. “How blessed were we to have known such an amazing and loving soul.”

Chamberlain's artistic journey extended beyond television; he also made notable contributions to theater and film, showcasing his multifaceted abilities as an actor . In addition to his professional accomplishments, Chamberlain publicly acknowledged his sexuality in a groundbreaking autobiography published in 2003, challenging societal norms of the time . His passing leaves behind not only a legacy of memorable performances but also serves as a reminder of the evolving perceptions surrounding identity within Hollywood.
