Alex Condon is a big reason why Florida has been one of the best teams all year, but he suffered an injury on Thursday in the Sweet 16.
In the Gators 87-71 victory against Maryland, Condon had 6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 14 minutes of playing time. He was taken to the locker room midway through the first half, but was able to return and play a few more minutes in the second half. The fact that he was able to come back is a positive sign for the Gators, but his status is a bit uncertain for UF’s game against Texas Tech on Saturday.
During his off-day, Condon talked to reporters about the work he and the training staff has done to try and get him ready for Saturday’s Elite Eight game against the Red Raiders.
“Feel pretty good, a lot of treatment over the past 12 hours or so,” Condon told reporters. “Getting with the trainers, making sure my ankle is going to be good for the Texas game. I feel like I’ll be ready to go for tomorrow. We’ll see how it goes. That’s the plan as of right now. I didn’t practice today, just kind of take a little weight off my foot and rest up before the game.”
Much of the talk about Florida is about their tremendous backcourt led by Walter Clayton Jr., but the front court has been equally as impressive. The Gators have multiple bigs who can impact the game in a positive way, but this group will face quite a challenge in Texas Tech forward JT Toppin.
Toppin averages 18.2 PPG and 9.3 RPG, and having Condon available for this game would be a huge plus for the Gators.
Tipoff between the Gators and the Red Raiders will be at 6:09 p.m. ET with a trip to the Final Four up for grabs.
