San Diego Fire-Rescue helicopter assisting with encampment removal at Torrey Pines Gliderport ...Middle East

News by : (Times of San Diego) -

City crews have begun removing around five tons of debris from an empty homeless encampment just north of the Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla on Thursday as part of a weeklong abatement program.

The operation involves a San Diego Fire-Rescue helicopter carrying trash and debris from the cliffside overlooking Blacks Beach to nearby dumpsters.

The steep terrain makes it difficult to access with other heavy machinery which can assist with removal of the encampment. The helicopter flight is also part of a training operation.

“SDFD air crews are required to conduct annual flight training, and this operation will help fulfill those requirements while also supporting the encampment cleanup operation,” a city statement reads.

According to the city, code officers have visited the encampment several times and found it abandoned. Crews posted notices on Wednesday informing anyone who may return to the site about the removal.

Additionally, the San Diego Police Department’s Neighborhood Policing Division visited the site to offer services but found it empty.

While operations at the Torrey Pines Gliderport will not be affected by the operation, a portion of the northern parking lot in the area has been closed since last week.
