The anthology series was first announced in 2021. Three years later, Variety confirmed that the show was still a go. "We’re very much intending to [tell that story]," American Story executive producer Nina Jacobson told Variety in 2024.
"We have great scripts on that. We’re trying to figure out when it’ll land," fellow EP Brad Simpson added. "It is a story that really resonates right now. It’s amazing. A lot of younger women are looking to her as sort of a representational icon of a certain period of time that’s really fascinating, and hopefully, we’ll be able to bring that to the screen soon."

Kennedy Jr. had an appointment for a fitting and [Calvin decided] Carolyn should show John the selection. He came out of the meeting smitten, with a few suits and Carolyn’s number."
