Initially, Costa Rican police believed Miller died from asphyxiation after eating some food. They have walked back this theory, deepening the mystery.
Doctor Kevin Gannon, who tried to save Miller, has ruled out food poisoning or an allergic reaction.
“Some people are saying it was anaphylactic shock from food he ate,” he told the New York Post.
“But I will say it is very, very rare for a patient to eat food and go that long without a reaction.”
Gannon and his team performed CPR for 30 minutes, but were unable to save Miller.
“There was not really much we could significantly do,” he said.
Gannon told People that Miller was clinically dead when his team arrived on the scene.
The family was staying at the five-star Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort hotel at Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica.
The national park is known for its rainforest, sandy beaches and coral reefs.
Marcel Rodriguez, a Costa Rican police official, revealed the family had a bad stomach when they returned to their hotel room on Thursday night, as reported by CNN.
They had eaten at a different hotel from where they were staying.
Police turned to food poisoning as a potential cause of death theory after they found out that there was nothing blocking Miller’s airways.
But, investigators have warned it could take some time for toxicology reports to come back.
Rodriguez revealed the family members would be interviewed as part of their probe.
And, they are combing through security videos in a bid to piece together a timeline.
AUTOPSY DELAYS?
Miller’s family may have to wait up to 90 days for the autopsy results, per The Mail.
Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia, a local cop, claimed officials are grappling with a backlog of cases.
He claimed the delay is because there has been a spike in homicides related to drug gang battles.
Brett and his wife, Jessica, paid tribute to their son after announcing his death.
“Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile,” they said.
“He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.”
Gardner spent his entire MLB career with the Yankees, spanning 14 years.
He was part of the 2009 team that defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.
Gardner won an All-Star award in 2015 and a Gold Glove gong in 2016.
His baseball career came to an end after the 2021 season.
