The Port of San Diego announced Monday its adjusting parking rates at select waterfront locations in response to growing demand and to maintain public access to the bay.
These changes, set to take effect on April 2 and July 1, aim to increase parking turnover, allowing more residents and visitors to enjoy San Diego’s waterfront, according to the port.
The rate increases will affect several areas such as Spanish Landing Park, Embarcadero Marina Parks North and South, and Shelter Island. At Spanish Landing, rates will rise from $1.00 to $2.00 per hour on April 2, with a further increase to $2.50 per hour on July 1. Embarcadero Marina Parks will see a hike from $1.75 to $2.50 per hour, while Shelter Island’s meters will increase from $1.25 to $2.25 per hour, then to $2.50.
Free parking will continue at popular locations such as Cesar Chavez Park, Coronado Tidelands Park and Shelter Island’s Shoreline Park, among others. Additionally, officials said commitment to public access ensures that 2,900 spaces will remain free, including those at many of the port’s parks.
Despite these changes, parking rates will remain among the lowest in California, with the port emphasizing that this is the first increase since 2017. Revenue from parking and bayfront businesses helps fund public services such as park maintenance, environmental protection and public safety, officials said.
To accommodate longer visits, the Port encourages use of nearby parking garages, including those at the B Street Pier, Seaport Village and the Convention Center. Visitors are also reminded that parking enforcement continues seven days a week with varying hours depending on the location.
