The 32-year-old was a late scratch for the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ exhibition game against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
Betts revealed to reporters he hasn’t been able to hold food down since before the Tokyo trip and is down to 157 pounds.
The eight-time MLB All-Star shared that he’ll most likely play in the beginning of the season under his usual weight.
“So looks like I’m just going to be light for a little bit. Maybe I play uphill a little bit for the beginning of the season,” Betts told reporters in Los Angeles over the weekend, per ESPN.
“But I just want to play, man. I’m tired of sitting, tired of just throwing up, tired of doing all this.
“I just really just want to play.”
Betts did add that he has been working out and that his body “feels great.”
“I mean, I feel great,” Betts said. “Like, my body feels great. I’ve been able to work out.
“I’ve been able to do pretty much everything but eat, which is strange.
“So, the symptoms have kind of gone away, I just have to figure out how to get my stomach to kind of calm down.”
Betts won’t play in Monday’s exhibition game at Angel Stadium and is a long shot to play in the Dodgers’ opening day game in the United States on Thursday versus the Detroit Tigers.
He began suffering from flu-like symptoms at the team’s spring training facility in Arizona, the day before the team flew to Japan.
Betts made the long plane trip but didn’t recover as quickly as hoped.
The Dodgers were without Bett’s services in the two games in Japan.

Betts is making the full-time transition to shortstop this season after playing most of his career in right field and second base.
Last season, he hit .289 with 19 homers and 75 RBIs.
Betts and the Dodgers won the 2024 World Series over the New York Yankees.
