Will the Israel-Lebanon truce break down amid the Gaza war? ...Kuwait

News by : (The New Arab) -

Since Israel resumed its attacks on Gaza on Tuesday, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning the resumption of the war "is only the beginning," many people have questioned if this will have a ripple effect in Lebanon.

Israel violated the ceasefire with Hamas on Tuesday at around 2 am, killing over 970 Palestinians since then.

While Hamas said they are still committed to the terms of the deal, the hostilities have sparked many conservations in Lebanon and triggered some concerns over the potential of war restarting between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as border clans.

An unnamed official source in Lebanon told The New Arab’s Arabic language sister site Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, "We do not hide our concern regarding the developments in Gaza and their repercussions in the region, but Lebanon will do everything in its power to preserve the ceasefire agreement that it agreed to last November, and is fully committed to it, unlike Israel which has violated every day."

The source pointed out that Israel was continuing to occupy Lebanon and launching attacks on the territory.

"From here, we call on the international community to press for a ceasefire and pressure Israel on this, as well as to completely withdraw from Lebanon and stop its attacks on Lebanese territory, because the continuation of violations will threaten stability," he said.

Lebanese media are also awash with concerns regarding the attacks spreading into the country, citing continued Israeli and US attacks across the region.

"Just as Israel is unsatisfied with what it has done in Gaza, it believes its war on Lebanon has not eliminated the threats against it. Its operational plan follows the 'unified battlefront' doctrine, ultimately leading to Iran," one report from Al-Akhbar said.

The report noted that Israel was already targeting Syria and encouraging separatism there, while its ally the US had launched deadly new strikes against the Houthis in Yemen.

Lebanese media sources also pointed out that Hezbollah was still present in Lebanon and could reconstitute its fighting capabilities.

Despite a ceasefire with Lebanon, the Israeli military announced it had targeted five Hezbollah members in three separate attacks in south Lebanon since 15 March.

Israel has continued to occupy five hilltop positions in south Lebanon, claiming there is still Hezbollah infrastructure in the South.

Lebanese authorities say that Israel has violated the truce at least 1,100 times, killing at least 87 people and wounding over 200 others.
