Fans, media re-debate North Carolina’s NCAA Tournament case after blowout win ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

North Carolina was a controversial inclusion into the field of 68 for the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

The selection committee sent the Tar Heels to Dayton for a First Four matchup against San Diego State despite only picking up 1 Quad 1 victory during the regular season. The Tar Heels ended up making a big statement, though, with a 95-68 victory over the Aztecs.

After a close opening few minutes, North Carolina took control of the game early in the first half and never looked back. The Tar Heels led by as many as 40 points in this game thanks to a brilliant performance on both sides of the floor.

The Tar Heels sunk 14 3-pointers in the win, shooting over 58% from beyond the arc. RJ Davis alone went 6-for-6 from 3-point range. Seth Trimble scored 16 points off the bench as SDSU had no answer for UNC’s second-unit.

The social media reaction to this game was split. While some saw UNC’s performance as justification for its inclusion in the field, others pointed out that its hot-shooting night against SDSU doesn’t change anything about North Carolina’s pre-tournament résumé.

Either way, there was plenty to talk about during — and after — this game. Here’s the best of the reaction:

To everyone who said North Carolina didn't belong in the First Four:Hey, you were right!

2 things can be true.• North Carolina didn’t DESERVE to be in the NCAA Tournament• North Carolina wasn’t the worst at-large team, and they have the talent to compete with anyone

North Carolina could win this game and every other game in this tournament by 30 points, and it still shouldn't have been in this tournament.

North Carolina winning a game in the NCAA Tournament does not mean they belonged in the NCAA Tournament. pic.twitter.com/YcRt1zorMX

Whatever happens with North Carolina tonight and in the tournament has ZERO to do with whether the Heels should have been in. A win validates nothing, a loss invalidates nothing. This is the NCAA Tournament. Please don't try to make sense of it.

We heard all the smoke about Bubba Cunningham sneaking UNC in and how North Carolina wasn't a tourney team and NOTHING about how San Diego State wasn't a tourney team. How do you feel now?

Hope everyone realizes North Carolina winning doesn't mean they deserved to make it.

If UNC is getting this version of RJ Davis, North Carolina is about to make a serious run

North Carolina could win this game by 100 and it still wouldn’t change my mind about them being in. Your resume either matters or it doesn’t.
