Skip Bayless has fired back at Gilbert Arenas and his ‘uniformed slander’ after the pair clashed over LeBron James.

The two have gone back-and-forth on their respective shows in recent weeks, arguing over the NBA legend.

When James surpassed 50,000 points in the league, Bayless lauded the Los Angeles Lakers icon – a move that caught many in the basketball world off guard as he is usually one of LeBron’s harshest critics.

The long-time sports columnist and TV personality was then called out by Arenas, who suggested Bayless would have seen James’ greatness from the beginning had he ‘opened his eyes’.

Arenas, a three-time NBA All-Star, also called into question if the writer really had a love of basketball, or if he was just in it for the money.

This week, Bayless hit back at those claims with a 15-minute video posted on his YouTube channel.

Less than 24 hours later, Arenas offered his response, suggesting he has ‘dissected that s***’ for 17 hours before his own show.

“I will respond to him, and it’s not going to be pretty. You’re in my world now,” he said.

“After LeBron passed 50,000 points, I posted a video applauding him for his astonishing longevity,” Bayless said in his initial rebuttal.

“Gilbert responded on his show, by saying if I had just opened my eyes, I would have seen LeBron’s greatness from day one.

“I also saw a clip of Gilbert saying that if I had dared to criticise Michael Jordan back in the day, I would have lost my job. What?

“In the same clip, Gilbert said I was one of those writers who didn’t really love basketball, but just wrote and talked about the NBA to make money. Huh?”

Bayless went on to describe the comments from Arenas as ‘uninformed slander’ and said he wants to hold the former basketball star ‘accountable’ for his words.

He continued: “I guess in this digital universe we all live in now, this lawless wild, wild, west known as the internet, any commentator can get away with saying any old thing.

“But this commentator will call you on it. I’m going to hold you accountable, if nobody else will. That means you Gilbert Arenas.

“You did play pro basketball, but I’m not sure you know or understand it the way I do.”

Bayless then went on to discuss his long-time sports media career, which dates back to 1977, claiming that there might not be anybody else in the world who has watched as much basketball as him.

He said: “I’m obsessed with the NBA. I love basketball even more than I love football, and I’m better known for covering and commentating on the NFL.

“In sports media, Gilbert, you will be hard-pressed to find anyone who has watched as much live basketball on TV than me.

“Night after night after night. Just ask my wife.”

Bayless later referenced Arenas’ comments on not criticising the legendary MJ during his career, suggesting there was ‘nothing to criticise’.

“Back in my day writing columns for the Chicago Tribune, my sports editor would have loved it if I had criticised Michael Jordan,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have gotten fired, I would have gotten a raise, seriously… I just wrote what I saw, and I had never seen anything like that man on a basketball court.”

Bayless then described MJ as the greatest and went on to argue that LeBron has a number of shortcomings when the pair are compared.

“I have never been anything but fair and honest in my assessment of LeBron James,” he argued.

Bayless concluded his monologue by offering Arenas a challenge.

“I would love to share the air with you, and go back-and-forth on the above,” he said.

“You can have all the time you need to make the case you want to make, just as I have made mine, then I will respond.

“How about next week? I’m still waiting to hear back from you Gil, and I wonder if you’re as afraid about debating me over LeBron, as he is of shooting late and close game free throws.

“Let me know, man.”
