General Motors recalls over 90k Chevrolet and Cadillac cars with transmission issue that ‘locks up tires’ on the road ...Middle East

GENERAL Motors has recalled over 90,000 cars with Chevrolet and Cadillac badges – after a worrying transmission issue was discovered.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem affects cars with 10-speed transmission and can cause tires to lock up.

The findings have shown that, over time, the transmission control valves in some vehicles can become susceptible to excessive wear.

This can eventually cause a loss of pressure within the valve, resulting in harsh shifting.

In the recall notice, the administration added: “In rare cases, the wheels may experience a momentary lock-up.”}, {

The affected models are the 2020-21 Cadillac CT4, 2020-21 Cadillac CT5, 2019-20 Cadillac CT6 and the 2020-22 Chevrolet Camaro.

The NHTSA estimates 1% of the 90,081 cars are potentially affected by the defect.

According to NBC News, owners of affected models will be notified from next month and will be able to get a new transmission control software added.

This will be able to detect excessive safety valve wear and prevent wheel lock-ups.

The recall comes after a driver of a 2021 Cadillac CT5 reported in September that the car’s front tires locked up back, according to the agency.

GM claimed that they had previously investigated the issue, but since the lock-ups generally lasted less than 150 milliseconds and no related accidents or injuries had been reported, they determined it was not enough time for the vehicle to lose control.

They subsequently closed the investigation, but it was reopened in November as a GM investigator found 115 reports of lock-ups – with one leading to an accident.

With this, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority decided to conduct a safety recall on 27 February.

This comes weeks after tens of thousands of Volkswagen vehicles have been recalled in the US after some engines began coming loose.

The company is ordering the return of some crossover SUVs, including certain Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport cars made in 2024 and 2025.

A total of 177,493 have been recalled over fears they could have loose engine covers.

The manufacturer wants to check whether the covers were installed incorrectly after the cars were serviced.

Loose covers could make contact hot engine surfaces, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

And officials warned this hot contact posed a risk of fire.

Elsewhere, Honda has been hit with a massive $630,000 fine after being accused of violating customers’ rights and mishandling personal information.

The auto giant will also be forced to make changes to its business after it found itself at the center of an investigation.

How can I check if my car is part of a recall?

If you own a car that's been recently recalled, you can easily check your VIN.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) makes it incredibly quick and easy for drivers to check and see if their vehicle is part of a recent (or past) recall.

The VIN checking tool also allows drivers to see whether or not the repair was completed within the last 15 years, making it an incredible tool for buyers of used cars.

All recalls initiated by the NHTSA mean free repairs for drivers, even if it’s an engine or a transmission replacement. If your VIN shows an active recall that has not been repaired, it’s important to make an appointment at your nearest dealership.

Here’s how to make an appointment for a recall:

Look up your VIN using the NHTSA tool. Find out the recall number/ID from the manufacturer. Call your nearest dealership’s service center with the ID number handy, and mention you’d like to schedule an appointment to repair the recall. The repair can only be done at a dealership, as they’re authorized by the manufacturer to conduct the repair free of cost using genuine parts. Try to make the appointment as soon as possible. Once the repair is completed, the dealership will update the information associated with the VIN to reflect it’s been completed.
