THE Tennessee Titans have made a shock decision to cut a player who recently agreed a long-term contract.

The Titans paid out a guaranteed $23 million on the contract worth up to $36 million over three years.

But they cut their losses with cornerback Chidobe Awuzie this week.

The 29-year-old struggled with injury problems during the 2024 season.

He played in just eight games during the campaign.

The defensive back suffered a groin injury in Week 3.

He was placed on injured reserve on September 27 and didn’t return until December.

Awuzie was a second-round NFL Draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2020.

He spent four seasons in Dallas before moving to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 29-year-old left for Tennessee after three years with Cincy.

But he struggled to live up to the price tag from his contract.

Tennessee had a season to forget and have made some drastic decisions during the off-season.

They finished 3-14 and hold the No. 1 overall pick in the draft next month.

The team fired Mike Vrabel as coach in January 2024 with Brian Callahan taking over.

Mike Borgonzi was named general manager earlier this year to help lead the new direction.

He was previously assistant general manager with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Borgonzi takes over from Ran Carthon, who was fired after two seasons.

Tennessee has a number of holes to fill in this year’s draft.

They have been linked with Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter.

Or they could opt to try and find a quarterback of the future by drafting Cam Ward out of Miami.

Borgonzi revealed he has been taking calls from other teams about trading for the No. 1 pick.

Speaking at the NFL scouting combine last month, Borgonzi said, “Anytime you have the No. 1 pick, it’s going to be a topic of conversation.

“I would say we’ve had some phone calls. I would keep those phone calls to the vest, but we’ve had some phone calls.

“At the end of the day, we have to make the best decision for the Titans.

“And if we deem taking a quarterback is the most important thing right now, then we’ll do that.”
