THE GAME: The Angels split the entire game between two of their starting pitchers but managed only five hits and lost 4-2 to the San Diego Padres in a Cactus League game on Sunday in Tempe, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Kyle Hendricks gave up two runs in five innings. Hendricks allowed five hits and two walks, striking out two. He threw 77 pitches. “My change up wasn’t great,” Hendricks said. “Change up was flat, kind of on both sides. Curveball was really good. Fast balls, both sides were really good. Good angle. So those are good signs.” Hendricks has allowed four earned runs in 13 ⅔ innings this spring, a 2.63 ERA. … Left-hander Reid Detmers gave up two runs in four innings on just 56 pitches. One of the runs was an unearned run in the ninth inning, thanks to two errors. “That was probably the best execution pitching game I’ve had this year,” Detmers said. “Efficient. All the pitches felt good. Was putting them in the right locations.” Detmers has a 2.30 ERA in 15 ⅔ innings this spring, with 12 strikeouts and two walks. He is competing for the fifth spot in the rotation. The top competition is from Jack Kochanowicz, who has a 2.92 ERA.

HITTING REPORT: Mike Trout singled and walked in three trips to the plate. Trout is 7 for 23 (.304) with an OPS of 1.109 this spring. … Taylor Ward also singled and walked. Ward is 9 for 28 (.321) this spring. … Luis Rengifo drew a walk and then stole second base. Rengifo was playing just his third Cactus League game of the spring, having missed time with an illness and a hamstring issue. The stolen base was a good sign that his hamstring is not bothering him. … Matthew Lugo circled the bases in the seventh inning when he hit a drive into the gap in right-center. Center fielder Forrest Wall mishandled the ball, allowing Lugo to come home. It was scored a triple and an error. Lugo is 15 for 46 (.326) this spring.

DEFENSE REPORT: Right fielder Jorge Soler overcame a slow jump with a leaping catch of a line drive. Soler is expected to be the Angels’ primary designated hitter, but they need him to be able to handle the outfield occasionally so Trout can get some days at DH. … Third baseman Scott Kingery made a bad throw on a routine grounder for an error.

UP NEXT: Angels (RHP Chase Silseth) at Arizona Diamondbacks (RHP Merrill Kelly), Monday, 1:10 p.m. PT, at Salt River Fields, FanDuel Sports Network West, 830 AM
