MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The trial of Adonis Smith, one of three men accused in the 2019 fatal shooting of an innocent Charlotte mother of two, has ended in a mistrial after the jury could not reach a unanimous decision.

Smith, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting, stands accused of being involved in a deadly shootout that took the life of Kendal Crank, a mother of two who was caught in the crossfire. The incident occurred along East 28th Street and North Tryon Street in March 2019 while Crank was on her way to nursing school.

In the first two days of the trial, the prosecution presented its case, with emotional testimony from Porchia Jordan, a close friend of Crank’s. Jordan recalled seeing Crank slump over in the passenger seat of her car, covered in blood, after being struck by a bullet in the head.

Tychius Dobie and Marquis Smith are also facing charges in Crank’s death, but all three men have been spared the death penalty following a ruling by the judge.

The case has now been declared a mistrial, and legal proceedings will continue as the prosecution decides how to move forward.
