The spokesman for the UN secretary-general, StéphaneDujarric, said in a briefing that “the Secretary-General [Antonio Guterres] isalarmed by the violent escalation in the coastal areas of Syria.” Guterresurged all parties to prioritize civilian protection and to refrain from“inflammatory rhetoric and actions.”
In light of “widespread disinformation and heightenedtensions,” Guterres highlighted the necessity of protecting independent mediaand human rights organizations, ensuring their ability to “shed light in atransparent manner on the reports and allegations.”
The escalating violence in Syria is severely affectingcivilians and infrastructure, with hundreds reportedly killed, including women,children, and medical staff.
The blocked Homs-Latakia highway has further restrictedhumanitarian aid, and insecurity has halted movements in coastal areas. Sixreferral hospitals, ambulances, and other medical facilities have beenimpacted, with urgent medical supplies needed, Dujarric revealed.
During his briefing, the spokesman for the UNSG touched onseveral topics including the situation in Ukraine, South Sudan, and theoccupied Palestinian territory.
