SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- Workers with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority are on strike Monday, halting bus and light rail service for the region. The transit agency and the union that represents more than 1,500 VTA workers have been unable to reach a deal on a new contract.
Approximately 100,000 daily riders in the South Bay will need to find another way to get around. The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265 represents striking bus and light rail operators, maintenance staff, dispatchers, fare inspectors and customer service representatives. The VTA suggested alternatives to public transportation such as carpooling, ridesharing, regional rail, walking and biking.
VTA Paratransit service will continue uninterrupted.
“It’s unfortunate that those people at this point have to find an alternative mode of transportation, but this was not our intent,” union representative Raj Singh told KRON4 Monday morning. “We’ve been very upfront with the agency from day one on what our asks were.”
The union is looking for 6% wage increases each year over the next three years, the VTA said, while the agency is offering a wage increase of 4%, 3% and 2% over three years.
“This offer maintains a competitive wage package for our operators, who are currently the second highest paid in the Bay Area and the fifth highest paid in the nation,” the VTA said in a statement Sunday night.
There is no word on when the two sides will get back to the negotiating table.
