Many in Orange County’s faithful community marked the start of the solemn season of Lent with Ash Wednesday services.

The Christ Cathedral had several Mass services planned in multiple languages throughout the day. Joining those at the 8:15 a.m. Mass, before their day of learning, were several hundred students of Christ Cathedral Academy, the elementary school that shares the cathedral campus with the Diocese of Orange leadership.

For those of the Christian faith — including Catholics, evangelicals and other denominations — the ritual of wearing ashes on one’s forehead symbolizes the dust from which God is believed to have created man and is an outward sign of repentance.

Ash Wednesday starts the 40-day period of spiritual introspection leading up to Easter, which honors the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
