The Chicago Cubs won this one going away, pouring it on 16-1 over the Padres. This team is simply too good for the Cactus League.
The Cubs did all that scoring without the benefit of a home run, by the way, and went a hilarious 12 for 23 with runners in scoring position.
Matt Shaw notched his first two hits of the spring in the process:

— Cubs Zone (@CubsZone) March 4, 2025Shōta Imanaga looked great today, and I don’t just mean the new look he was sporting (THOUGH I MUST ISSUE A CORRECTION THAT APPARENTLY THERE WAS NO HAIRCUT, JUST HAIR TUCKED UP):

— Bleacher Nation (@bleachernation.bsky.social) 2025-03-04T20:14:59.510ZAfter Imanaga, each of Caleb Thielbar, Ryan Brasier, and Julian Merryweather pitched a clean inning apiece. Three veteran relievers who cannot be optioned and are expected to make the Opening Day bullpen.
Porter Hodge scuffled a bit through a tune-up appearance in what was a 16-0 spring game, and I don’t think I’ll take too much away from the volume of pitches it took him to get through. Even then, he still struck out a couple. Probably good to get a little practice pitching through traffic and holding the damage to one run.
Eli Morgan, who does have an option year remaining, pitched a scoreless 9th. So the day was full of clear big league relievers for the Cubs, though the crowding and the option might bite Morgan on Opening Day. Even if so, he’ll be up plenty this year. The Cubs didn’t trade Alfonsin Rosario to acquire a Triple-A reliever.
Michael Busch continues to rake. As does Gage Workman (discussed earlier today):
